Son of James Chalmers and Sarah (born ~1826) Park, baptised 27 February 1875 at St. Peter's Church in Leeds, Yorkshire. In 1861 was living with his widowed mother at Cliff Terrace in Leeds. In 1871 was still living with his mother at 8 St. George's Terrace in Leeds working as an assistant in an engineer's office. In 1881 was still with his mother, now living at 58 Camp Road in Leeds, working as a clerk for a gas works. In 1888 & 1891 he and his new family were living at 2 Highfield Terrace in Leeds, working as a travelling commercial agent.
