Biography

Roger Parke (also seen as Park), born about 1658 (This is a guess based on subtracting 21 from his approximate marriage date); died probably in Rye, Westchester County, New York, before 1 June 1690; member of the Reformed Dutch Church and Reformed French Church in New York City; married at the Reformed Dutch Church, Manhattan, 21 December 1686, Sophia Claes Jans.[1][2]

Roger and wife Sophia had their daughter Marie baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church in New York city, 26 December1686.[3][4]

Roger was deceased by the time of his son Roger's baptism on 1 June 1690.[4]

Theresa Hall Bristol wrote[4]: "ROGER PARK, the Hartford-Rye Patentee, was deceased in 1690 . . . "

Research Notes

  • Some unsourced online lineages place this Roger Park of New York as son of Allen Park. However, the Roger Park, son of Allen Park lived in New Jersey, NOT New York. These are two different Roger Parks. It is very unlikely that Allen Park had two sons named Roger that lived to adulthood.
  • The Rev. Dr. Baird confuses this Roger1 with his son Roger2. See the Research Notes for his son Roger2 for clarification.
  • There is no documentation or sources stating this Roger's last name was ever spelt "Parkes" or "Parks". The two entries for his children's baptisms spell his last name as "Parke".
  • Our Roger Park's origins are unknown. England and France are two possibilities. "The 'History of Rye, N. Y.,' contains a record of some descendants of Roger Park, who is supposed to have come from France before 1699."[5]. The fact that Roger attended the Reformed Dutch Church and Reformed French Church points to a possible Huguenot connection.
