Biography

I (Karen Parker) received this from Arch Parker, a cousin, several years ago. He and his sister did a lot of research trying to find John's parents.

A SUMMARY OF WHAT I KNOW OF JOHN & MARY PARKER by Arch Parker

Wilda Bowers is an elderly lady I corresponded with in Otselic who is a 'self-made' historian and genealogist of the area. Most of her info comes from cemetery records. Zona is another cousin that worked on the mystery of John until her death about 2 years ago. She was meticulus and very fussy about her work. I wish I could be that organized. The most revealing document I have is Amy Parker Sturges' will. In it she names all siblings and neices & nephews who were surviving at the time she made the will. Without it we would never have found Amasa - as he was not mentioned in John's will for some reason. (I have tried to be factual. When I am speculating, I will indicate so.)

1799 - Reuben is born in Chenango County. - Census record of 1855 Exact date unknown.

1800 - John and Mary are in Chenango County with 1 child under 10 y.o. - 1800 census

1801 - Sally is born 8 Sept. 1801 - Wilda Bowers cemetery records.

1803 - Amasa is born 3 Sept. 1803 - Grant Co. Wi. Obit.

1804 - John & Mary buy about 230 acres for $338 cash, located on east edge of Sherburne Township in Lot 5. - Legal Land Papers

1805 - Amy Parker is born 18 Sept. 1805 - Wilda Bowers

1806 - John & Mary sell 20 acres to Solomon Aldrich for $85. - Legal land papers

1808 - Hiram is born 1 Jan, 1908 - Sauk Co. Wi. obit.

1808 - John & Mary sell 91.25 acres to James Aldrich for $913. According to Herrington they have now sold all of their property. - Legal Papers. In these papers John & Mary are described as being from DeRuyter. A division of the county took place in 1806. A part of the town of DeRuyter was placed in Madison County. The portion that remained in Chenango County was named Otselic in 1817. The exact location of J & M at this time is questionable. (This is Karen Parker's note: Unless Arch overlooked a sale when typing this someone's math is wrong. I come up with about 10 acres still belonging to John Parker.)

1810 - John & Mary are in Chenango County Both are in the 26 - 45 age group. They have 3 boys under 10 years of age. Hiram is 2 y.o., Amasa is 7 y.o. WHO IS THE THIRD?? They have 1 boy in the 10 - 16 age group. (Reuben is 10-11. They have two girls under 10 y.o. (Sally is 8, Amy is 4) - 1810 census

1812 - Philander is born 3 May 1812 - From Jackie - death certificate. or 4 April 1812 - Karen Parker

1816 - Diana M. Parker is born - do not know exact date. - Smyrna Death records.

1816 - John & Mary of Sherburne bu 80 acres in SE qtr of Lot 68 Township of Smyrna.

Exactly where J & M are living I do not know. They are in the 1810 Smyrna census, and again in 1820. Their total property disposal by 1808 and renewed propery acquisition in 1816 seems to relate to the war of 1812. Pure speculation. A participant or a British subject? Probably a coincident. There is a John Parker Jr. in Scituate, RI. in 1810. Could this be our John? We know that at time people were counted in two places in a given census.

1820 - John & Mary are in Smyrna with 1 boy under 10 y.o. (Philander is 8) 1 boy 10-16 (Hiram is 12) 1 boy 16 - 18 (Unknown) 2 boys 16-26 (Amasa is 17, Reuben is 20) John is in the 45+ catrgory 1 girl under 10 (Diana is 4) 1 girl 10 - 16 (Amy is 15) 1 girl 16 - 26 (Sally is 19) Mary is in the 45+ category. - Census records.

(Hiram is 22) - Census records

Karen's corrections or additions to Arch's file. 1808 - Hiram's birthdate is 1 Jan 1808 not 1908.

1812 - Philander's birth date the source I had said he was born in Cherry Valley which is not true so I don't think the April date is correct either but I'm not sure.

1835 - Amasa's daughter Susan Ann Parker born Columbus, Warren Co., PA. - from Jack Wilson a descendent of Susan.

Late 1830's - Amy's husband's name is David not Davin.

Note: There are two Fanny Allens - Fanny and Ariel Allen have a daughter Fanny Allen who married Hiram Parker.

Fenimore, Grant Co. is in Wisconsin.

Amasa's daughter Maria was born in 1827 according to 1880 census not in 1851.

Philander's son should be John Wallace not John M.

I have more children for Philander and Harriet and most of Harriet's family but I go back no further than her parents on her side. This seems to be another big brick wall.

1850 federal census - In the 1850 census there are two families listed in household #160; family #165 has A. Ferris age 39 (who is he) and Isaac Rury age 10 (Isaac is John Parker's grandson, son of his daughter Dianna and George Rury, she died in 1849) and family #166 John Parker, Lydia Ferris and B. Slater.

1860 federal census - Living with John Parker are Abram Ferris 41 (farm laborer), Sarah Ferris 14 (house keeper), Theodore Molley 13 or 15 (farm laborer)

Burial: Smyrna West Cemetery Smyrna Chenango County New York, USA

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

There are many "trees" that show John Parker and Tabitha Westcott of Rhode Island are his parents but I can find no proof. Also many show his wife as Mary Shaw with a marriage taking place in Albany NY 6 Dec 1809 but I cannot understand traveling from Smyrna to Albany in the winter with five small children.
