Biography

This profile is part of the Parker Name Study.

His parents were James Parker and Anna Doty. He married Sarah Allen on July 28, 1808 . He married Elizabeth Preston in 1832. He married Sarah Ann Minturn (1796–1853) on 4 April 1849 in Crawford, Illinois, United States. He married Sarah Bonser on February 05, 1855.

George Parker appears in the 1830 census for Clark Co. Coles Co. was formed from Clark later that year[4]. He died in Coles Co. on March 18, 1862 in Coles, Illinois, United States

From the Sargent Papers written in 1945[5]:

It is said the Parker family crossed the river at Palestine, Ill. when coming to the new state. George Parker Sr., with his oldest boys came to what is now Coles Co. and built a pole cabin about the year 1827. At the time they were up here building, his son John A. Parker was born near Palestine Jan. 29, 1827. When the cabin was finished, George Parker returned for the family and the infant son was hauled up on a sled to the new home in the wilderness. This cabin stood a short distance south of where he later built his home, which stood about ___ of where the Parker Cemetery is now located.
He he lived the balance of his life [there]. The family grew up in this neighborhood and his boys settled near by.
George Parker was a man of short stature, but a man of rugged endurance as was necessary to withstand the hardships and labor of these times.
There seems to be no proof just where he was born, but it is a family tradition that he was born in Pennsylvania, removing to Ohio, then to Crawford Co., Ill. In early life at age 19 years he was boating salt down the Ohio river to Portsmouth, Ohio. On one trip down a German handy with the paintbrush, painted his picture, which is now in the possession of John A. L. Parker, a grandson of Westfield, Ill. (1945). The same grandson has in his possession the gun barrel from the rifle owned by his grandfather Parker. It was in the fire when a house burned and all that was left was the barrel.

The painting noted by Samuel Sargent may be that of Joseph Shoemaker instead of George Parker. Joseph lived in Portsmouth, Ohio and was probably the one ferrying salt. Therefore, Joseph may have been the one rumored to have been born in Pennsylvania.

On his find a grave memorial someone who has researched him posted that he also married Elizabeth Flint, widow of Thomas Flint , Elizabeth and Thomas were the parents of Mary J Flint, George married Elizabeth in 1832 no additional information on Elizabeth.

Parker Cemetery

George and Elizabeth formally deeded the Parker Cemetery on February 20th, 1843. The cemetery was present before George bought the land.
