John Hobson Parker was born on April 4, 1872 in Ouachita County, Arkansas near Camden. His grandfather was the first settler of what is now Camden.[1]
In 1880, he lived in Ecore Fabre Township, or sometimes called Fabre's Bluff, Ouachita County, Arkansas. The township was originally an early French and Indian trading post. His father donated the land for the first courthouse in Ouachita County, and eventually became Camden, Arkansas.[2][3]
In the 1890s, he attended the University of Arkansas, where he received his education and returned home to become a teacher.[1] In 1900, he continued to live at home with his parents in Ecore Fabre Township. He was a teacher and taught at the local school to earn a living.[4]
John married Ila Pryor on October 14, 1902 in Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas.[5] After his marriage, he lived at 419 Clifton Street in Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas. He worked in the saw mill as a lumberman to earn a living.[6]
He was appointed United States Marshal for the Western District Court of Arkansas in Fort Smith on June 22, 1914.[1] He moved his family to Fort Smith and lived on North 18th Street. He owned his home with a mortgage.[7]
After he left the marshal service, he continued to live in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was elected mayor of Fort Smith and served one term from 1925 to 1929.[1] He then became a life insurance salesman in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He owned his home valued at $10,000, and he owned a radio set, which was considered a luxury item at the time.[8] He later became an automobile dealer in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1933, he was appointed business manager of the State Hospital. Before his death, he returned to Fort Smith, where he ran a lumber brokerage business.[1]
John died of apoplexy on August 28, 1937 in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas.[9] He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas.[10]
