Notes

N853Jackie Settle email June 2011: Found baptism record on findmypast 1st November 1835 at St Andrew the Less, occupation for Frederick cook.No birthdate. The records for this church are very scant. It was a very poor district and apparently children often wrote up the register. Some writing being very hard to read or totally illegible. This information was given to me by the archivist at Cambridge record office.

Children helped in school later. Sharon: "After David abandoned the family, Harriet lived at 134 EarlSt., Stockport Rd., Manchester, Lancashire during the early times when she sent some of their children to Canada (according to the childrens’ Canadian records). " Went to Quebec in 1875 (aged 39) with Jessie (12), Charles (7) and Lucy (2) [passenger list in file] leaving Liverpool May 6 and calling inLondonderry on May 7. "SS Moravian" Allan Line. from Liverpool May 06 Quebec May 17Londonderry 1875-05-07 After David MURDOCH apparently abandonded the family, Harriet, "through a Baptist Society, took her brood to Canada, where she placed the boys on farms (all except Charles who was just a baby)" according to Barbara Carter's letter to Kay 22 Aug 1967. The letter goes on to say, "Eventually they all came to the USA, and managed to do reasonably well, Uncle Fred becoming a dentist, Walter a barber, and settling all across the country from Colin in Tacoma. to Charlie (who came over here at some point early in his young manhood) in New York." [note: the fourth brother "farmed out" must have been Roderick!] The letter also goes on to say "The girls were taken back to England, Minnie became a nurse and died at 26 years old, Jessie married and had 3 boys and a girl, two of the boys still living. My Mother had 2 boys and 3 girls. Harriet Murdoch died in 1911 at the age of 77, while my Mother was overhere effecting a re-union of the brothers." Ancestry.com's Patrick Family Tree says there's proof of birth/christening in the "Cambridgeshire Baptism Index; annotated by Cambs FHS". Patrick Family Tree also says that Harriett died in "Chorlton" [a neighborhood of Manchester after 1904?] The 1861 Bingham, Nottinghamshire, UK census says Harriett was born in "Cambridge" (DavidMurdoch1861Census.bmp), and was 25 years old in 1861 (therefore born in 1836). The 1841 Llanllwchaiarn, Newton, Montgomeryshire, Wales, UK census says that Harriet was 6 years old on census date (6 Jun 1841), and was born in Wales. Jackie Settle's database, settlej01 on Rootsweb, says Harriet was born ain 1835 in Adam & Eve Row, Cambridge, England. Jackie's email is jackie@lostsheep.com. Excerpts [slightly edited by Sharon Primbsch] from Harriet's childrens' records at the Marchmont Home (as preserved by Barnardos) describe the circumstances of the sending of Fred, then Colin & Walter, then Roderick, then Marion/Minnie to Canada: "Parents living at Monmouth where father was Revenue Officer, expelled for drink. Now in trying circumstances. Compelled to part with [them], being unable to support [them] longer." Another says, "...their father...has deserted his wife, who was left to struggle with eight children.... Mother manages to support herself by needlework." According to Mary Lambert, Harriet may have started a school after 1891, and her daughters Jessie & Lucy assisted her.
