Biography

Notables Project
Henry Parkes GCMG is Notable.

Henry Parkes was regarded as the "Founder of Australian Federation".

Sir Henry Parkes was baptised at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire on 2 Jul 1815, the son of Thomas Parkes and Martha Faulconbridge. [1][2]

He arrived in Australia on the 'Strathfieldsaye' as a Bounty Immigrant with his wife Clarinda in Jul 1839. [2]

He moved to the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, New South Wales, in 1877 where he purchased 600 acres (2.4 km²) in the area now part of the town of Faulconbridge. The current town was named after Parkes' home, "Faulconbridge House", Faulconbridge being the maiden name of Parkes' mother. The original railway platform at Faulconbridge was possibly built to serve his residence.

Parkes is buried in Faulconbridge Cemetery, alongside the grave of his first wife, Varney Parkes and other family members.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:

My research of an ancestor who travelled on the Strathfieldsaye as a bounty migrant has revealed the Henry Parks (correct spelling) was a bankrupt Bone and Ivory Turner who fled England to avoid the law. He changed his name's spelling by adding an ' E'. His greatest skill was reading english which stood him in good stead throughout his life. While he lived he avoided any town or location being named after him, insted names of his relatives were used.

The spelling of surnames of pre-literate populations are always dependent on the literacy and aural accuracy of the curates and vicars who record their births, marriages and burials. Parkes was the common manner of writing Parks in Birmingham. In Stoneleigh were Henry was born it was written in numerous variations, aka Purks Perkes Purkes Purk Perks and Parks. If Sir Henry Parkes had been wanted by the law the little matter of an 'e' would not have deterred his arrest when he returned for several visits to the 'home country'.

Please add Henry as father to Parkes-1596 (Gertrude Amelia Parkes).

His parents (according to christening record listed as a source on this profile) are: Martha Faulconbridge and Thomas Parkes. I am unable to link these profiles due to the project protection on this profile.
