Ethel Maud was born in 1900 at Coventry, Warwickshire, the daughter of Frederick James Parkes and Mabel Broadbent Parkes formerly Bevins. [1]
Ethel Maude [sic] was baptised on 19 December 1900 at St. Paul's Church, Foleshill, Coventry. The family was then residing at 63 Princess St and father Frederick was a tram conductor. Ethel's date of birth was recorded as 16 November 1900 in the baptismal register. [2]
In the 1901 UK census the family was still living at 63 Princess St. Ethel was aged 4 years. [3]
Both Ethel's parents had previously lived in the US for several years and were married there. A decision was made to return to the US to live and the family sailed aboard the Oceanic from Liverpool on 23 March 1904, arriving in New York on 30 March 1904. US Immigration show the family was intending to stay with Mabel's mother at 145 E 8th St, Williamsbridge, New York. [4]
In the 1910 US census the family was living at 3830 White Plains Ave, Bronx, New York. Ethel was aged 9 years. [5]
Ethel and her father Frederick traveled to the UK in 1911, sailing aboard the Oceanic from New York and arriving in Southampton on 26 July. [6]
Frederick returned to New York on 3 September 1911 but Ethel remained in England until 1913. She returned to New York with her father's cousin Florence Carter, daughter of John Carter and Mary Jane Carter nee Troman/s. They sailed aboard the St Paul, leaving Southampton on 1 January and arriving on 10 January 1913. They both gave US Immigration the name of their nearest relative in the UK as R. Parkes of 26 Park St, Blackheath, Ethel's paternal grandfather and Florence's uncle. Ethel was returning home to 3830 White Plains Ave, Bronx and Florence to her mother at 345 Concord Ave, Bronx. Ethel was aged 11. [7]
In the 1915 New York State census the family was still living at 3830 White Plains Ave. Ethel was aged 14 years. [8]
In the 1920 US census the family was still at the same address. Ethel, aged 18, was a clerk in a lace factory. [9]
In the 1925 New York State census the family was residing at 4141 Paulding Ave, Bronx, New York. Ethel, aged 24, was a lace carder. [10]
In the 1930 US census the family was still living at 4141 Paulding Ave, Bronx. Ethel, aged 29, was then an operator at a printing factory. [11]
The family were still at this address in the 1940 US census. Ethel was aged 39. No employment was recorded. [12]
Ethel Parkes died in November 1984 aged 83 years. Her date of birth was recorded as 16 November 1900 in the Social Security Death Index. Ethel was living in New york at the time of her death. [13]
