Biography

Mary was born on 14 May 1894 at Atherton, Lancashire, the daughter of Abraham Parkes and Mary Jane Mullett. She was baptised on 3 April 1895 with her brother John at the parish church in Atherton. The family was then living at 12 Wesley St and Abraham was a bricksetter. Mary's date of birth was incorrectly recorded as the 14 May 1895.

In the 1901 census Mary was living with her family at 96 Tyldesley Rd, Atherton. She was aged 6 years. [RG13/3596 37 Pg 7]

In 1911 the family was living at 2 Tyldesley Old Road, Atherton. Mary, aged 16, and sister Rhoda, aged 14, were both working as machinists at the blouse factory.

Mary Parkes married Edwin Benyon in 1924 at the Central Methodist Church, Atherton [Lancashire BMD].

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Edwin and Mary were residing at 14 Argyle St, Atherton. Edwin, born 8 May 1893, was aged 46 and working as a cotton spinner operative. Mary, born 14 May 1894, was aged 45.

When Mary’s brother John Parkes died in 1953 Edwin Benyon, a cotton spinner, was one of the executors of his will.

Mary Benyon died on 9 May 1959 aged 64 years [Death Jun Qtr 1959/Bolton 10b 541].
