Biography

Hannah Parris was born in 1756 in Williamstown, Berkshire, Massachusetts Bay, daughter of Elkanah Parris (1728–1813) and Grace Mott (1739–1818).

Hannah (35) married David Comstock (38) (born on January 25, 1754 in West Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island; son of William Comstock and Ann (Spink) Comstock) on April 19, 1792 in Adams, Berkshire, Massachusetts.

Hannah died on April 19, 1792 in Danby, Rutland, Vermont, United States, aged 35.

HANNAH PARIS COMSTOCK
HANNAH PARIS was born in 1765, and Baptized on May 11, 1765. She was the daughter of ELKANNAH PARIS and GRACE MOTT.
NOTE: per to spelling of the family name: the one reliable source citation record listing Hannah's Baptism, and the one work of genealogical literature (A History of the Comstock Family in America, 1949) both show her maiden name spelled as "Paris". However, in a second notable genealogical literature (The Tilson Family Genealogy) which contains a substantial mention of Hannah's father: Elkanah, the family name is spelled "Parris". The full body of that text is shown further below, in part because it lists Hannah Parris as a daughter of Elkanah Parris and Grace Mott, and mentions Hannah and two of her brothers in regard to witnessing land transactions of her father.

  • NOTE: the date shown was Hannah's Baptism date, and could have also been her date of birth, however, that is not expressly shown to be the case.
These births were copied from R. H. Cook's Manuscript of Williamstown—Notes, pages 330-337, at Pittsfield, Massachusetts
Elkanah Parris was at Williamstown as early as 1753. On December 13 of that year he was in the company of Capt. Elisha Chapin at Fort Massachusetts and served a considerable time, probably to near the close of the war. He returned to his native town, Pembroke, and married his wife at Scituate, returning with her to Williamstown.
Soon after he built a house at the easterly part of the village, near Green River. After the Peace of Paris, 1763, he became a Quaker, and was the only family of that denomination in that town.
In 1765 he was part owner in a saw mill near his home, and owned town lots 30 and 57, also 63. He was one of the proprietors of Williamstown and moderator of meeting, April 13, 1770, and Dec. 17, 1771. About 1772 he built a dwelling at the "Hopper," near Greylock Mt., 5 miles southwest from the village, and moved from his former house to it with his wife Grace and four children. The frame of the house is white oak. The writer had the pleasure of dining in it in 1909. It is now owned by Stephen Bacon, 3d, and four generations of Bacons have dwelt in it. From the census of 1790 it is learned that Elkanah Paris was living within the borders of Williamstown, whether at that place we cannot say. Owing to church and town records being burned, very little can be got to trace the early families of the town. No doubt much of the records could have been restored by church and town through family bibles and those then living. The lack of interest is no credit to Williamstown that it cannot produce better church and town records. The church was seeking to save souls, but could it not at the same time restored a part of the lost records.
So prominent a person as he was in the affairs of Williamstown, it is strange that nothing can be learned of what became of the large family of children and of the going out from this world of the parents, Elkanah and Grace Parris.

PARRIS, ELKANAH, born 1728, from Williamstown, Mass. in 1797, settled on the farm, and near where his grandson, Wesley, now lives. He was originally from Pembroke, Mass., and son of Thomas Parris, whose father's name was also Thomas, who migrated from England during the latter part of the seventeenth century. : He married GRACE MOTT, of Scituate, Mass., and soon after settled in Williamstown, where they remained until the spring of 1797, when they removed to Danby, the country then being comparatively new. The log house in which they lived, stood a few rods west of the present framed dwelling. He was one of the early members of the Quaker society, of exemplary habits and morals. He was a man of considerable wealth and a respectable farmer, and a worthy, peaceable, influential member of community. Although a man of intelligence and ability, he did not take a prominent part in political affairs, and having been considerably advanced in years at the time of settling here. The descendants of Elkanah Parris are quite numerous, many of whom still remain here, while others are scattered throughout this and other states, being men of wealth and prominence, good abilities and education, and of respectability of character.
