Biography

Ransom Abraham Parrish was born January 14, 1802 in North Carolina (possibly Granville County). [1]He is said to be the son of Ezekiel and Elizabeth Crawford Parrish however evidence exists that makes this doubtful.

Note: The DOB and DOD for Ransom Parrish is based on the dates on his headstone. The 1850 and 1860 US census indicates a birth date of 1801. In the 1850 Census Ransom's birthplace is given as South Carolina while the 1860 Census it is indicated as being North Carolina. The 1870 US census indicates a birth date of 1802 and birth state of North Carolina. Best available evidence indicates Ransom Parrish was probably born 1802 in North Carolina, possibly Granville county.

Ransom Parrish married Tabitha Dorcus Chappell February 27, 1825, in Hickman County, Kentucky [2] Hickman County. Kentucky Marriage Records indicate a marriage date of March 2. 1835[3] The 1825 date is unsourced, and the 1835 date is about the time the family would have been in Tennessee. The March 2, 1835 date is being used as it is from a primary source. It may be revised if a alternate source indicates that a revision is warranted.

Ransom Abraham Parrish died October 21, 1877 and was buried at Mount Zion Cemetery, Union City, Obion County, Tennessee, USA[4]

The parents of Ransom A Parrish are currently unproven but have been said to be Ezekiel and Elizabeth Crawford Parrish. Most of the available census records indicate Ransom Parrish was born in North Carolina. Based on the 1850 census it would appear that Ransom Parrish married Tabitha Dorcas Chappell in Kentucky (her resident state). James and Elizabeth Parrish, their first two children were born in Kentucky. That would indicate Ransom Parrish and family had been present in Kentucky since 1830 or before based on James' age in the 1850 Census. Sometime between 1832 and 1836 Ransom Parrish moved his family to Obion, Tennessee. Ransom Parrish is found in the 1840 US census for Obion, Tennessee.

There is not a Ransom Parrish found in the 1830 US census of Kentucky, however there is also a Ransom Parrish found in Alachua, Florida in 1830. It is likely the Florida Ransom Parrish is the son of Josiah Parrish as listed in "Pioneers of South Georgia" There is a Ransom Parrish b 1798 in the 1840 Census from Columbia, Florida. That makes ir fairly certain that Ransom Parrish b 1798 is not the Ransom Parrish of this profile since Ransom Parrish b 1802 had been in Kentucky between 1830 and moved his family to Tennessee about 1836.

"Pioneers of South Georgia" is unsourced and may contain errors, but indicates Ezekiel Parrish was born in North Carolina. Most of his children are said to have been born in Georgia. This supports a conclusion that there are two Ransom Parrishes and that Ransom Parrish b1802 may not be Ezekiel Parrish's son. There are children of Ezekiel's that were born before Ransom b 1802 and they were born in Georgia making his birth in North Carolina compelling evidence that Ezekiel is not his father.

Questionable Parents

New evidence provided by Ransom Parrish descendants, Jim and William "Bill" Parrish supports a conclusion that Exekiel and Elizabeth Crawford Parrish are not this Ransom Parrishes parents. Based on this evidence it appears that Ezekiel and Elizabeth are the parents of the slightly older Ransom Parrish that resided in Florida. Ithere is some evidence that there is a family connection but that has not as yet been proved. Possinle parents will be addressed in a separate section.

The evidence found in existing census, marriage records, wills and a letter written by Ransom Parrish descendant, Leona Sanders Parrish (see image) makes it clear that there are two Ransom Parrishes and that Ezekiel or possibly his brother Josiah is the father of the Florida Ransom Parrish Based on this evidence Ezekiel and Elizabeth Crawford Parrish are being removed as the parents of Ransom Parrish b 1802.

There is some recent DNA evidence that indicates a connection between the two Parrish lines. This will be discussed in another section,

Two different Ransom Parrishes

Research Notes:
1. There is a Ransom Parrish listed in the 1830 US census at Alachua, Florida
2. There is a Ransom Parrish listed in the 1840 US census at Columbia, Florida.
3. There is also a Ransom Parrish listed in the 1840 census at Obion, Tennessee which fits the profile of Parrish-1649.
4. There is a Ransom Parrish b 1798 listed in the 1850 US census at Columbia, Florida. This is lpossibly the son of Ezekiel and Elizabeth or his brother Josiah Parrish.
5. There is a Ransom Parrish in the 1850 US census at Obion, Tennessee that fits the profile of Parrish-1649.
6. There is not a Ransom Parrish listed in the 1860 US census of Florida.
7. There are two different Ransom Parrishes listed in "Pioneers of South Georgia"

The Parents of Ransom Parrish

Based on US Census records and "Pioneeers of South Georgia" It is clear there are two Ransom Parrishes. One is the son of Josiah or Ezekiel Parrish born about 1798. The current conclusion is that the Ransom Parrish of this profile is not the son of Ezekiel and Elizabeth Crawford Parrish.

There is some evidence that has come forward that indicates the father of Ransom Parrish b 1802 may be another Ransom Parrish.

Additional Research Notes:

1. There were 47 Parrish households living in North Carolina according to the 1800 US census and 51 Parrish households in the 1810 US census. It may be that Ransom's parents are among the families found there in North Carolina between 1800 -1810.
2. There is a Ransom Parrish in Granville. North Carolina in the 1810 census that may have some relation to the Ransom Parrish b 1802.
3. There is a mortgage document between a Ransom Parrish and a Henry Wheeler dating to around 1820 in Granville County, North Carolina, It is not known if this Ransom Parrish has any relation to the subject of this profile,
4. There was no Ezekiel Parrish found in the 1800 or 1810 US Census, However, there is a E Paris found in Clay, Kentucky in the 1820 census. Ransom Parrish was in Kentucky between 1820 - 1830. Two of his children were born in Kentucky, one as early as 1831.
5. There is a mortgage document between a Ransom Parrish and a Henry Wheeler dating to around 1820 in Granville County, North Carolina, It is not known if this Ransom Parrish has any relation to the subject of this profile,
