William Parry served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 27 August 1862 Mustered out: 31 May 1865 Side: USA Regiment(s): Company D, New York 84th Infantry Regiment
The first census record of William was the 1855 New York Census, He was listed as being 24 years old. He, his mother Caroline and two brothers were living with his sister Eleanor and her husband James Johnson in Brooklyn, New York. He worked as a carpenter.[2]
William married Margaret McNally 8 December 1857 at the Johnston Street Episcopal Church in Hempstead, Queens County, New York. There are no church records as they were destroyed by fire at the church in July or August of 1857. There are no civil records as marriage records weren't kept at that time.[3]
In 1860 William and Margaret were living in Brooklyn with two sons. William was 30, his wife 20 years old. His occupation was listed as stairbuilder. [4]
William fought in the Civil War for 3 years. He enlisted in August of 1862 in Brooklyn. He mustered with Company D, 84th Infantry and transferred 2 June 1864 to the 5th Infantry.[5]
When the 1865 New York State Census was taken, William lived with his family in Brooklyn, New York, working as a carpenter. He was 36 years old.[6] His mother Caroline and brother Henry were living with them.
William only lived 5 years after his military discharge and died at the age of 40 of consumption in 1870.[7]
Several problems arose when, after his death, his wife Margaret applied for his military pension. Upon his enlistment, his name was mistakenly spelled as PERRY on his military records, rather than the correct spelling of PARRY. At a later date, these records were changed and on his military record, he was known as 'William H. Parry--alias William H. Perry'.
