He registered for the Civil War draft on 3 March 1863 in New York with Captain Levi F. Bowen's Company, having already served with the 130th New York Volunteers.
Lyman served as a Private during the Civil War with the Union 19th Regiment, New York Cavalry, Company D from 8 August 1862 to 30 June 1865. He enlisted into service at Middlebury, Wyoming County, New York on the 8th of August for a term of 3 years. Mustering in on the 15th of August 1862 as a Private with Compand D 1st Regiment Dragoons. He was transferred from 130th Regiment New York Volunteers Infantry. Taken prisoner on 23 June 1864. Paroled at Andersonville, Georgia on 26 November 1864. He mustered out of service as a Private at Clouds Mills, Virginia on 30 June 1865. He is described as; being born in Canandaigua New York, a farmer with blue eyes, light hair, light complexion 6 feet, 2 inches high. He received $50.00 bounty pay by the county for his service in the military.
Before 1866 he married Maria H. Blood, the daughter of Solomon Blood and Elizabeth Johnston. They had eight children, three are still unknown as of this writing; 1. Julia Eve born September 1865 2. Edward born about 1869 3. Fred born August 1882 4. George born abut 1871 5. May born abaout 1876
He was a farmer most of his life, however just before his retirement be worked as a miler.
He can be found in he following census; 1850 in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York 1860 LeRoy, Genesee County, New York where he was working as a farm hand 1870 in Middlebury, Wyoming County, New York 1880, 1900 & 1910 in Hartland Township, Livingston County, Michigan
He died at the age of 76 years, 8 months, 28 days.
