Late Percy Parsons
The announcement of the death of Mr. Percival Eden Parsons (Perc), of 83 Smith street, Wollongong, which occurred at Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney on Tuesday evening, was received, with general expressions of regret on the South Coast. He had been spending a holiday down Nowra way where he was suddenly stricken with illness, and was conveyed to Sydney to be operated upon.
65 years of age, and a member of of well-known and highly respected family, Perc Parsons had seen Wollongong progress from very primitive conditions. A builder by trade, he had erected many homes throughout the district, thus helping to fill the vacant spaces which were numerous until a few years ago.
In the public life of the town he had played a useful and prominent part. To him and a few other stalwarts the Wollongong Town Band owes its existence. An active member for years, he worked consistently and diligently for its progress, and when he retired from office, one of his sons. Reg, continued the good work.
The late Mr. Parsons figured prominently as Sergt-Major in the local Artillery under Major Robertson, Major MacCabe and other distinguished officers, when many competition honors were gained. Wollongong Rifle Club had his practical and wholehearted support, while several other local institutions will miss him as a wise counsellor and valued helper.
Perc Parsons possessed a cheerful and kindly disposition that won for him a very wide circle of friends. He took an interest in the welfare of the youth of the community and his good advice was tendered in a kindly way that invariably had fruitful results. It was a sad blow to him when his wife predeceased him about two years ago.
Members of his family are Elizabeth (Mrs. W. Brownlie), Reg, Thomas, Alice (Mrs. Baker, Kensington) and Ivan. Mrs. W. David is a sister to the deceased, while Messrs J. J. Parsons, Jim and George, are brothers.
The remains were laid to rest in the C. of E. cemetery on Wednesday afternoon. The funeral cortege was a lengthy one and representative of all parts of the district. Wollongong Town Band headed the long line, playing the Dead March. [6]
