Biography

Robert was born in Jamaica Plain, MA, and raised in Erie, PA. He attended the local schools before heading off to Penn State University to earn a B. S. in Commercial Chemistry, graduating June 1944. He was drafted in the Army, serving as a supply sergeant during WW II in the Pacific.

After the war, he returned home to earn his M.S. in Pulp and Paper Technology from the University of Maine in 1946. Following graduation, he began a long career as R&D Development Engineer at Holingsworth and Voss Co. in Walpole, MA. While there, he was the key developer of micro fiberglass filter paper. The filters he designed were utilized in more than 60% of the world's semiconductor cleanroom HVAC systems. The rapid advances in semiconductor chip manufacture could not have happened if such filters had not been available to provide the extremely clean air required for chip fabrication. Bob retired in 1988.

After meeting his future wife Carolyn Detz while at Penn State, they married in June 1947. They began their life in Dedham, then moved to Norwood and eventually settling in Westwood, MA, where they spent 37 years.

During retirement, Bob and Carolyn settled in Moultonborough, NH, where they enjoyed many years on Lake Winnipesaukee. He loved to sail and take part in various choral groups (Nashua Choral Society, the Monadnock Chorus, the New Hampshire Music Festival Chorus, and the New Hampshire Friendship Chorus).

Bob was a member of TAPPI, and the American Chemical Society, and was a trustee and member of the Loon Preservation Committee.

Those who knew Bob well said of him,"he was never one to brag or bask in a title. He was one of those silent creators behind the scenes. He was well regarded in the community; sociable, gentle, honest, and confident pillar to all who knew him. He was a gentle giant with a deep respect for all people and life in general".
