Biography

Laurence Michael Harvey Parsons, 6th Earl of Rosse was born on 28 September 1906. He was the son of William Edward Parsons, 5th Earl of Rosse and Frances Lois Lister-Kaye.

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He succeeded as the 9th Baronet Parsons, of Birr Castle [I., 1677] on 10 June 1918. He succeeded as the 6th Earl of Rosse [I., 1806] on 10 June 1918. He succeeded as the 6th Baron Oxmantown, co. Wexford [I., 1792] on 10 June 1918. He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1929 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1931 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)

He married Anne Messel, daughter of Lt.-Col. Leonard Charles Rudolph Messel and Maud Frances Sambourne, on 19 September 1935, with whom he had two sons.

He fought in the Second World War. He was appointed Fellow, Royal Astronomical Society (F.R.A.S.) He gained the rank of Captain in the Irish Guards. He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1945. He held the office of Vice-Chancellor of Dublin University between 1949 and 1964. He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society of Arts (F.R.S.A.) He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) He held the office of Pro-Chancellor of Dublin University between 1965 and 1979. He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1974.

He died on 1 July 1979 at age 72.
