Biography

  • 1856 27th July unnamed boy born at Clarks (farm), Malborough to Aaron Partridge and Elizabeth, previously Crispin. Aaron registered the birth 18th August. No name entered after registration.[1]
  • 1856 29th September Baptism of John Elworthy Partridge son of Aaron and Elizabeth Elworthy Partridge[2]
  • 1861 Census John Partridge age 4 born Malborough visiting John and Elizabeth Crispin (the names of his maternal grandparents) in Kingsbridge [3]
  • 1871 Census John Partridge age 14 born Malborough living in household of William Hayne as an indoor farm servant.[4]
  • 1872 11th November to 1876 11th November Apprentice on board Gertrude, Lora and Peggy, all out of Salcombe. 1876 11th November to 15th December Seaman on Peggy. 1877 24th February to 5th October Able Seaman on Argyra out of Salcombe. 1877 23rd November to 1878 22nd January on Lady Mary out of Salcombe. 1878 11th March to 1879 27th June Bosun on ?Haste out of Weymouth.[5]
  • 1879 Issued certificate of competancy as Second Mate on 7th October.[6] His date of birth is given as 27th July 1856, which matches that of the unnamed boy.
  • 1886 25th May Marriage of John Elworthy Partridge age 29, Master Mariner to Susan Chapman age 28. Their respective fathers are Aaron Partridge, miller and Adam Chapman, mason. Witnessed by Adam Stephen Cleverley Chapman and Ann Elizabeth Chapman.[7]
  • 1918 18th January death while Master of a merchant ship, the David Morris (92223). According to deaths at sea archive[8] death was "18 Jan. 1918 Lisbon supposed drowned". According to a Devon newspaper,[9] the ship dragged its anchor in a heavy gale and drove ashore. All hands took to the lifeboat which unfortunately capsized and Captain Partridge and the customs guard went missing, believed drowned. Probate later granted.[10]

Research Notes

  • Unable to find an entry in deaths register in 1856 for an unnamed Partridge. The GRO have failed to find an entry too, so the un-named boy seems to have lived.
  • There is no birth index entry for a John Elworthy Partridge. This suggests that the unnamed child registered by Aaron was baptised John Elworthy, but Aaron didn't register the name with the registrar.
  • No child of this age present in 1861 or 1871 Census for household of Aaron Partridge, though Richard and William older and younger are
