Biography

Walter Frederick Partridge was born at 78 Trafalgar Square, Scarborough, Yorkshire on 17 Oct 1878[1][2] probably because his parents temporarily left Lincolnshire to live with or close to his aunts Harriett and Lucy Ann, who had both married and lived in Scarborough. He was the eldest son of Frederick Rose Partridge and Annie (Pennington) Partridge.

As a two-year old baby, he temporarily lived with William & Ada Lee at 106 Grantley Street, Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincolnshire[3] whilst his mother Annie had their second child in Newton-le-Willows; and his father Frederick was in London, following the untimely death and funeral of his 25-year old brother John Thomas Partridge. Walter moved south with his parents and siblings to Battersea, London ca.1883. By 1891, Walter lived with his parents and family at 6 Freeland Street, Battersea.[4] Almost seven years after his birth, Walter was finally christened on 29 May 1885 at St. Mary's Church, Battersea together with his younger siblings Ethel Mary and Arthur Rose.[5]

On 18 June 1900, Walter enlisted into the British Army, and joined the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays) as a Private. He was shipped out to South Africa for the Second Boer War, and campaigned in the Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and the South African campaigns of 1901 & very early 1902. Unfortunately, Walter died from disease on 7 Feb 1902 in the small town of Winburg, a rail terminus in Orange Free State[6]

After his death, his mother Annie received from the British Army the grand sum of £9 1s 3d to cover his last wages and the £5 death gratuity[7]
