1774 15th November was baptised Richard Partridge in East Portlemouth. Son of Richard and Susanna.[1]
1794 26th June marries Ann Blank in Chivelstone. (Both previously unmarried.) Witnessed by John Gould and John Blank. Richard is from neigbouring parish of Portlemouth.[2]
1837 Dies age 63 lived in Portlemouth (neighbouring parish) according to burial entry. Presume this to be in Holset as his widow is still farming there in 1841.[11] Buried 9th February in Chivelstone (possibly with Ann??).[12]
Research Notes
The only other Richard Partridge born in East Portlemouth was baptised 23rd May 1790 which is very late for a wedding in 1794!
There is another Richard Partridge born in East Allington to John and Susanna in 1774, living in Aveton Gifford and married to a Sarah in 1851 Census[13], but Sarah married to our Richard is a widow by then.
The burial record is for someone of the correct age.
He married Sarah, whose maiden name must be Cowle because in 1851 Census[14] Elizabeth Lapthorn, head of family, has mother Sarah Partridge (widow), making her maiden name Partridge, plus an uncle John Cowle, who can't be from father's side.
In his marriage to Sarah he is described as Richard Partridge junr which implies he is the son of a Richard Partridge, or at least the most junior in the area. He is also a widower.
In the 1861 Census at Holset [15] his son, also a Richard born around 1799 describes Sarah as his step mother. From that Richard's baptism we find his mother was Ann.
No other Partridges born to a Richard and Ann Partridge in East Allington or East Portlemouth, or anywhere else in East Hams in available records,
Seems to be a gap in Portlemouth baptism records 1804 to 1812, so may have missed some children.
