Obituary
"LOCAL AND GENERAL" The Braidwood Review and District Advocate (NSW : 1915 - 1954) 21 May 1935: Page 2

THE LATE MRS. ALLEY

By the death of Mrs. T. U. Alley, which occurred in Sydney on 7th March, yet another of the district's grand old pioneers goes to her eternal reward. She was a highly notable figure in Braidwood's history, and her passing awakens many recollections of the golden past.

A Miss Pass, she came to Araluen from London when only very young, and resided there for over 50 years. It was here she married Mr. T. U. Alley (who, by the way, is still hale and hearty), and saw the old Valley in its palmiest days, when there were as many hotels almost as there are residences now, and gold was being won by the miners almost from one end of Araluen to the other in huge quantities. Mr. Alley had a store here, and prospered exceedingly. At one period he and the late Mrs. Alley resided in Braidwood for a couple of years. He purchased the business of the late Mr. Tweedle, which was situated in Wallace-street between where Mr. M. Anderson's shop now stands and Mr. Grigg's butcher's shop (then Armstrong's Hotel), leaving his Araluen business in charge of Mr. Tom Emmott, who later went to Moruya and started business there. While Mr.Alley was in Braidwood the old Oriental Bank went broke and closed its doors.

After carrying on for over 50 years in Araluen Mr. and Mrs. Alley retired in 1910 and went to Sydney, and have lived at Roseville ever since. The deceased had been in failing health for a considerable period. She was attended all through her illness by Dr. Beatty, who will be well remembered by Braidwoodites.

Mrs. Alley was a great charity worker, and when in Araluen her acts of kindness were legion. Big-hearted and generous to a degree, she saw that no just cause went unrewarded, and no caller for help went away hungry.

She was a sister of the late Mrs. J. Hyland, of Bettowynd, Miss Pass (Sydney), and Mrs. J. H. Byrne (Nithsdale). She leaves a family of four sons and three daughters.
