NOVESTA RESIDENT FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS

Wm Patch Kept Store, Operated Saw Mill and Farmed Land at Novesta Corners in Early Days. (From Deford Correspondent). William Patch, Sr., died of brain trouble at his home near Novesta Corners Dec. 19 at the end of a week's unconsciousness. Deceased was the youngest child of Truman and Emily Patch, who moved from Ashtabula, Oh. to Michigan in the early days. He was born in Birmingham, Mich., Feb. 22, 1853, in which locality he spent his juvenile years. Oct. 11, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Annie Caswell of Troy, Oakland County, Mich. Three children were the fruit of the union, Leonard and Edward Patch of Detroit and Mrs. Samuel Gowen of Rogers City, Mich. In 1880, Wm. Patch with his family moved to Tuscola county and settled at a point in Novesta called Patchtown, afterward named Novesta Corners. In company with his father and brother, Eugene, they kept a store, operated a saw mill and farmed land for some years at said place, In 1883, his wife died leaving three children of tender years. In 1884, he married a second wife in the person of Miss Emma Moshier of Novesta township. To this union there are three children living, Mrs. Bessie Perry, William Patch Jr., and Miss Annie Patch, all of Novesta.

Wm. Patch, Sr., was the youngest of a family of five children all of whom have passed on except his older brother, Arthur, now passed his four score years and he was too feeble to attend the funeral. Home of this aged brother is at Rochester, Michigan, with his daughter. The old settlers of Troy, Oakland county, will remember the deceased in his youthful days as a natural master of song. The little home ballads that touch every tender heart were rendered with exquisite pathos by the voice that is now forever stilled. The funeral was held on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the F. W. B. church of Novesta Corners. Elder Willerton (Baptist) and the Free Methodist minister officiated. Remains were borne to the grave by his two sons, Leonard and Edward, two grandsons, Howard and Clare Patch, and two sons-in-law, Arthur Perry and Leslie Taylor. Followed by a large concourse of kindred and friends, the mortal part was laid in Novesta cemetery. He leaves a wife and six children, and nine grandchildren to remember an indulgent husband and father. Leaves for them to mourn for the "touch of a vanished hand, for the sound of a voice that is still."
