William Pate was born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.

William John Elphick Pate was born in 1852 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire^[1], and baptised there on 4 May 1853^[2]. His parents were Ellen Pate, née Smith, and Gibbs Pate, a grocer.

William became a baker and moved to Croydon, Surrey^[6]. He married Clara Elizabeth Turner in 1879 at Hackney, London^[4], and the couple had at least one child, William^[5].

William was living back in Cambridge when he died there in Addenbrooke's Hospital on 21 December 1899^[9][10].
