Biography

William Pate was probably born in Haslingfield, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1786, and christened there on 6 August[1][15]. His parents were William and Mary Pate.

William married Sarah Gibbs in 1810 at Fen Drayton, Cambridgeshire[2]. They had at least eleven children: Mary, Sarah, William, twins Anne and Elizabeth, Emma, Gibbs, Louisa, Margaretta, Rosina, and Phillis. The family lived first in Great Eversden, Cambridgeshire[3], then moved by 1813 to Harlton, Cambridgeshire[5], then by 1824[10] to Haslingfield, Cambridgeshire. (Little actual moving was involved - these villages are all roughly on a line just over 2 miles long.)

William was working as a carrier at the time his older children were christened (1815-1822)[5][6][7][8][9]. In the 1841-61 censuses, however, his wife is a recorded as a farmer and farmer's widow, so it seems that William may have acquired or inherited some land, perhaps explaining the move to Haslingfield; his father had probably died there in 1820. A William Pate appears in the 1830 electoral register[13] for Haslingfield, as the occupier of a house and land, and as a farmer in the juror books[14]; but identification is uncertain.

William died in 1841[15], run over by a wagon[16]. He was buried in Haslingfield on 9 May[16].

Research notes

Caution is needed with William because he was not the only William Pate married to a Sarah in this region of Cambridgeshire at the time. The 1841 census is invaluable, as it shows several of his (sometimes distinctively named) children, for whom we have baptismal records from Harlton which give his occupation as 'carrier'. Gibbs Pate was not living with them at the time of this census, but his baptismal record - also from Harlton and with father's occupation 'carrier' - seems strong evidence that he is from the same family, and that this is the William Pate who married Sarah Gibbs. The link with the Eversdens (Sarah's birthplace) is further evidence.

In particular he should not be muddled with the William Pate baptised in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire in 1781, who continued living in Haddenham and had children called John, William Henry, Anne Maria, Robert, Henry and Fanny Mary.

(Also do not confuse with the William Pate who married Sarah Griffin in Thorney, Cambridgeshire, in 1817.)
