Biography

Scottish flag
Lewis Paterson was born in Scotland.

Birth

It is conjectured that Lewis Paterson was born sometime in late 1797; he was baptized as "Ludovick" on 11 December 1797 in Glenmuick, Tullich and Glengairn Parish, in the south-west of Aberdeenshire[1]. His parents were recorded as John Paterson and Elizabeth Catanach, and their residence in the village of Tullich.

Early liaison and child

Lewis and Jane Small had a child baptized 9 November 1825 and named John. He was born out-of-wedlock. The baptism register in Glenmuick, Tullich and Glengairn Parish[2] reads: "November 9... Lewis Paterson in Tullich & Jane Small in Aultonree had a son born in Fornication baptized - named John". Ludovick is now recorded definitively as "Lewis", and later records (with the exception of the 1851 and 1861 Censuses - see below) seem to suggest that this is his preferred first name.

A record of the marriage (or banns) of Lewis Paterson and Jane Small has not been found in any of the old parish registers for any Church of Scotland parishes in the period 1825 to 1830 (the latter, the year in which Lewis married Jean McConnach). It is conjectured that the couple, Lewis and Jane, separated. Their son John lived until he died in 1841. He does not appear in Lewis' household enumerated in the 1841 Census so his death may have preceded the census date of Sunday 6 June 1841, or he may have been enumerated elsewhere (perhaps at his conjectured birthplace Alltanruie in the household of Donald Small (his uncle) (see John's profile for details), or not at all.

Marriage

Banns of marriage between Lewis Paterson of Glenmuick, Tullich and Glengairn Parish and Jane MacKonach of Logie Coldstone parish had been regularly published on 28 November 1830 and no objections offered[3].

Lewis married Jean McConnach on 5 December 1830[4], shortly after Jane their first known child was born. The kirk session record states: "Lewis Paterson in the Parish of Tullich and Jean McConnach in Newgroddie, having contracted in order to marriage, consigned pledges, and having been regularly proclaimed, were married on the 5th Decr [sic] 1830".

Children

Lewis and Jane had nine children recorded in the registers for the Parish of Glenmuick, Tullich and Glengairn {sources are provided on their individual profiles}:

  1. Jane born 24 November 1830
  2. Charles baptized 18 October 1832
  3. James baptized 24 December 1833
  4. Isabella baptized 24 September 1835
  5. William baptized 1 May 1837
  6. Elizabeth baptized 23 June 1839
  7. Lewis baptized 3 January 1841 -- presumed died in early infancy
  8. Lewis baptized 30 January 1842
  9. Alexander Farqu baptized 30 November 1844

Household and residences

Lewis and his household were enumerated in the 1841 Census[5]. The following data was recorded:

Paterson Lewis, M, 40, Farmer
Paterson Jane, F, 35
Paterson Jane, F, 10
Paterson James, M, 8

Dundass, James, M, 18, Agricultural Labourer
Kerr, Archibald, M, 12, Agricultural Labourer

Similarly, Lewis' household was enumerated in the 1851 Census[6]. The following data was recorded:

Paterson, Lewis, Head, M, M, 53, Farmer of 180 Ac Emp 11 Servnt, Glenmuick

Ewan, John, Servnt, U, M, 19, Farm Labourer, Glenmuick
Anderson, Chas, Servnt, U, M, 12, Farm Labourer, Glenmuick

In both census returns the household was enumerated at Eastfield. Eastfield (now known as Eastfield of Monaltrie) is a farmstead on the north bank of Ballater Burn about ½ mile southwest of Tullich[7]. Eastfield may have been attached to Monaltrie (formerly Ballater) House[8], built in 1782 under the direction of Francis Farquharson, 6th of Monaltrie. The Farquharsons of Monaltrie lived in the house in the nineteenth century. Of note, Lewis and Jane's youngest child was baptized Alexander Farquharson Paterson (b. 1844) suggesting a connection between the Patersons and their landed neighbours' descendants (of which there were many).

Lewis was a farmer of some substance as in the 1851 census, he is recorded as being a farmer of 180 acres with 11 servants, four of whom resided in his household, including a "house servant". Lewis and his children enumerated in the household were all born in Glenmuik, consistent with their known baptismal records. Jane was born in Coldstone, and the other household members were born in Glenmuik with the exception of one laborer born in Strathdon, a neighbouring parish.

Lewis and his household were enumerated in the 1861 Census[9]. His first name is recorded as Louis (an analog of Lewis and Ludovick). The following data was collected in the census of his household which consisted of 12 persons on census day. The dwelling had 9 rooms and was located at New Groddie. Presumably Lewis farmed the property of 200 acres on which it sat. He employed two labourers.

Surname, Forenames, Relationship, Marital Status, Sex, Age, Occupation, Birth County, Birth Place

Lewis and his household were enumerated in the 1871 Census[10]. His first name is now recorded as Ludovick, The place of enumeration was Groddie in Logie-Coldstone civil parish. The residence was 10 rooms, there were 11 persons enumerated at the location and Lewis was recorded as a farmer managing 170 acres.

Included in the household was his 5 years old grandson Ludovick W Gillan. Ludovick (or Lewis) was also a member of the household, his age is given as 28 years and thus his birth would have been in 1842-43. He is listed as a son: it is conjectured that he is the second of the sons also named Lewis and is the son who was baptized on 30 January 1842 (listed as child #8 above). All members of the household were born in Aberdeenshire, except the barn lodger who was an elderly unmarried Irish broom maker. The following data was collected:

Surname, Forenames, Relationship, Marital Status, Sex, Age, Occupation, Birth County, Birth Place, Notes
Paterson, Ludovick, Head, M, M, 72, Farmer of 170 Acres, ABD, Glenmuick 10 rooms

Death and estate

Lewis Paterson died on 29 November 1890, in Groddie, Logie Coldstone and Cromar Register District, aged 93 years[11]. He was stated to be a farmer and was widower to Jane McConnach, the cause of death was apoplexy which he had suffered for 4 days. Lewis' parent are stated as John Paterson and Elizabeth Cattanach [sic]. His son Alexander was present at his father's death.

Lewis left a will dated 8 May 1888 (testate), the Settlement of which was lodged in the records of the Aberdeen Sheriff Court (Extract settlement dated 26 Feb 1891) [12]. It mentions a block of land (and dwelling thereon) to the north-west of the village square in Ballater. It may have been retained in the family and may be the place where a number of the family died ~~more details to be confirmed Neil Stewart 7/4/21~~

In the 1841 census return Lewis and Jane's second child Charles (born in 1833) and their seventh child Lewis (born in late 1840 or January 1841) are not enumerated. It might be conjectured that they were not part of the household on census day, suggesting that they were elsewhere, or possibly deceased. The naming of a second son Lewis in 1842 a year after the first Lewis lends support to the probability that the first Lewis died in his first year. The Parish Registers for Glenmuick, Tullich and Glengairn[13] do not record deaths so the possible deaths of either sons: Charles or Lewis, in the united parish of Glenmuick, Tullich and Glengairn, cannot be confirmed through the registers.

Groddie[14] was believed to be the site of a mediaeval mansion:

There is some confusion in the naming and location of East Groddie, New and Old Groddie, and Groddie. Roy's "Great Map"[15] shows New Grogy (sic) and East Grogy (to the north-east). South of New Grogy is an unmarked stream which is conjectured to be present day Groggie Burn. It is conjectured that Old Groggie was located on this stream, as shown on the 1902 of the Six-inch to the mile maps[14]. What was recorded in the Parish registers as Newgroddie is conjectured now to be known as Groddie. Old Groddie as a name seems to have been disused and lost, cf. the 1871 Census return and Lewis' death register where "Groddie" is used.
