Born Edinburgh, Scotland, 1870. (The entry for her birth states that it is St Georges, Mid-Lothian, a district of Edinburgh.) The 1871 census taken on the night of 2 Apr gives her family's home address as 76 Fountain Bridge West, St Cuthbert's Parish (St George District), Edinburgh.
She died while living at her son in law Walter Hall's farm, Sandholme (now part of Barville Park farm) at Kasouga near Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Various records relating to her son Eric and sister Sophia state that she lived in Grahamstown at the times of their deaths. At the time of her sister's death she was resident at Oatlands or Oatlands Road, Grahamstown, now Makanda.
The civil marriage register and her death notice state that she was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.
How she came to be known as 'Effie', the name used for her in several official documents in South Africa, including her death notice, is unclear, but probably has to do with 'Euphemia' being the name of one of her aunts and her grandmother, Effie being an abbreviation thereof.
Notes
(Searching on Family Search for her birth details takes one to [1] which does not list her parents in the entry, but does so in the search results. Listing them as George Paterson and Magaret Ann Cuthbert, the same first names as are listed in the death notice for her Sister Sophia and with the same difference between the search data and actual entry in the case of Sophia's birth data.)
