Biography

Charles is born on July 21, 1883 in Rochester, New York, the son of Thomas Hugh Paterson (1858-1937) and Carrie Knickerbocker (1861-1906). His father, Thomas, was born in Oxford County, Canada West (which became the province of Ontario in 1867). Thomas was descended from Scottish settlers who had cleared the land in what is now the northeast part of Toronto. His mother, Carrie Knickerbocker, was born in Rochester, New York. Her parents were Judson Knickerbocker (1833-1914) and Helen Mar Howes (1838-?). Judson Knickerbocker had been a Lieutenant for the Union Army in the civil war.

Charles is living in Rochester at the age of eight in the New York State census of 1892. In the US census of 1900, he is 17-years old, living with his family in Niagara Falls, New York. And he is 21-years old in the New York State census of 1905. He is living with his parents and grandparents on a farm in Parma County (northwest of Rochester) and the census record shows that he is in school. It is likely that the school is Cornell University where Charles graduated (likely in 1907) with a degree in civil engineering.

Charles’ work took him to Ohio (likely Cleavland) where, on May 2, 1912, he marries Marian E. Ewer (1887-1959). The actual record of the marriage badly mangles the spelling of her name, showing it as “Marian Louise Eniver.” Marian was born in Youngston, Ohio, the daughter of Walter D. Ewer (c1848-?) and Anna Courtney (c1850-?).

On September 12, 1918 Charles signs his Draft papers. The war is over in November so there is little likelihood that he served. From this record, it is known that Charles was tall, of medium build with grey eyes and black hair. The address given is 3060 Coleridge Road, Cleveland Heights, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. This is about eight kilometres southeast of the centre of Cleveland. The record also shows that he is president of The Paterson-Leitch Co. A Google Maps street view of the address shows a tree-lined street with solid two-story houses. It is unlikely the houses today would be the same as those in 1918.

The Paterson-Leitch Company was (and maybe still is) a steel-fabricating company. The company was incorporated in January 1914 and Charles Paterson was one of the founding principles. There were two other founders, both with the surname “Leitch.” A 1933 newspaper article gives a sense of what Paterson-Leitch made: “C.J. Paterson, a member of the Paterson Leitch Company of Cleveland, has been awarded a contract for the steel construction of the new McDonald Observatory, which is to be built in Texas to house a new 80-inch telescope . . .”

The 1920 census records show Charles and Marian living in Cleveland Heights with two children: a six-year old Anne Maria and a four-year old Thomas H. There is also a servant living with the family. The 1930 census shows the family in the same place, now with a servant and three children: Anne (17), Thomas (14) and Caroline (9). Sometime prior to 1938, the family moves to South Euclid Village, just to the east of Cleveland Heights. Their address is 1621 Sheridan Road which puts them (in today’s geography) just beside the Mayfield County Club. A Google Maps street view of this address today does not show the house as there are too many trees on the lot for it to be visible. The family is found in South Euclude Village in the 1940 census. There now is only one child, the 18-year old Caroline, left at home and there still is a servant.

The records suggest that Charles was financically successful. From the 1920 census on, the family always has a servant. The census records show that they lived in up-scale neighborhoods. Passenger lists from the port of New York (1938, 1941) show they took vacations in the Carabean. These same lists show that in June 1954 Charles and Marian sailed home from England on the R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth in a first class cabin with ten pieces of luggage.

Marian dies at the age of 71 on February 24, 1959 in South Euclid. In August, 1962, Charles dies at the age of 79 in Ohio.

Charles and Marion had three children:

  • Anne Maria Paterson (1913-?) + Hugh M. Eaton (1910-1994)
  • Thomas Hugh Paterson (1916-1992) + Virginia Ely (1923-2009)
  • Caroline Paterson (1921-?) + Joseph E. (Sepp) Dietzgen (c1918-2003)
