Sarah Gillard Patey was born to Robert Patey and Susanna (Gillard) Patey and christened on 15 April 1815 in South Pool, Devon, England. [1] Her father worked as a bargeman and may have been away, which might be a reason for Sarah's older brother, William, not arriving until two years after his parents' marriage, when most 'first children' arrived suspiciously close to the event.
In 1838, one year after the beginning of civil registration, Sarah married John Distin, also from South Pool. [2] She already had a daughter, Mary, born two years before the marriage. The couple had: William Gillard 1839, Susanna Gillard 1840, Sarah Jane 1845, and John Samuel 1850.
On the 1841 UK census, Sarah, age 25, appears living with her husband and daughters in Channel, Malborough, Devon. [3] On the 1851, she is living, with her husband and children, in Market Street, Malborough. [4]
Sarah died at the young age of 37, [5] and was buried on 24 November 1852 in Salcombe, Devon.
