On 28 Aug 1795, he married Anne Johnson in Campbell County, Virginia.[1] They made their home in Surry County, North Carolina,[3] where they had at least five children:[4]

By 1830, the Patterson family had moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee.[5]
Joab must have died after 1830, as no further records are found for him. Family tree sources claim he died in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee.[4]
