In 1860, John still with parents, and the family was in Kentuck, Pittsylvania. He would enlist in the CSA on May 30 of 1861, and join Company A of the 38th Virginia Infantry. Unfortunately, John took ill in March of 1862, and died in a Richmond Hospital on March 24, 1862.
