Julius was born in 1853. He passed away in 1945.
Bio notes: Julius Brice Patterson was interviewed in 1934 and again in 1945 by members of the DAR. This interview was later published in "Pioneers of the San Juan Country Vol. II." We are so fortunate to have this information as a basis for the genealogy of the Patterson family. Reading it in Brice's own words makes us feel that he's sitting in the lobby of the Arlington Hotel spinning a yarn for us.
During his life he crossed the country at 17 with the "Georgia Colony". He was an early settler in the town of La Veta, where was a cowpuncher at the famous Carlyle Cattle Company. He and his brother Robert, also raised cattle on the ranch near La Veta belonging to their father, Samuel Everett Patterson. Later he had a string of 60 mules, and packed supplies to the mines in Silverton. He owned several mines, and also owned race horces. After leaving Silverton, he moved to Pagosa and purchased the Arlington Hotel.
He took an active interest in the political affairs of the San Juan Country. He was a Town Trustee in Silverton, a County Commissioner in San Juan County, the Mayor of Pagosa, and the County Judge of Archuleta County. He also served as the state Representative in Denver for Archuleta county for two terms.
There are several pages in the interview about the "Big Snow of 1884". Brice tells of the sometimes tragic and yet at times humorous events that happened during that winter. He played a major role in rescuing the town.
He and Julia are buried in Silverton, where we put up headstones a few years ago. (Trish & Jess)
