NOTES / OBITUARY[3][4]

Joseph Martin Draper married Elizabeth Ann Patterson, on 14 February 1831, in Ohio.

She was born on 30 November 1813, and her father was Samuel Patterson.

Joseph and Eliza had at least five children:

  • William (born 20 September 1832);
  • Samuel P. (born 26 September 1839);
  • Mary Jane (born 12 April 1843);
  • Elizabeth Ellen (born 7 January 1845);
  • Margaret Ann (born 20 May 1852).

They also had at least two children who died young. (which could be the same as the above listed, or different, research needed)

Clarence A. Brown (1890-1968) of Indianapolis, a descendant of the Patterson family, did genealogical research on the family in the 1960s and earlier. Among his papers was a carbon copy of a page he typed with his notes from a Partition Suit filed in Butler County, Ohio. Some of the typed numbers and letters are unclear because of filling of the characters on the carbon copy image, so numbers here may not be exactly correct (particularly confusing are the 3's and 5's). The notes appear to say that, "The records of the Clerk of the Common [Pleas] Court of Butler County, Ohio, Code Record Vol. 2, page 377, Cause # 553, show that in 1856, Samuel Patterson et al filed a partition suit against George Patterson, Samuel Davis, et al., asking for partition of 71 acres in Sections 9 and 16 in Morgan Township. The pleadings in this case allege that Samuel Patterson, Jane Peterson (Husband, William of Indiana), Alsy Ann Lowe (Husband, Lowely Lowe of Indiana), Margaret Foster (Husband, Archibald of Indiana), Elizabeth Ann Draper (Husband James [sic] M. of Butler County, Ohio), and George W. Patterson of California were the children of Samuel Patterson, deceased."

The above material is quoted because it shows the name of Eliza Patterson Draper as "Elizabeth Ann Draper," supporting the 1850 census image listing her as "Eliza Ann" rather than with the middle initial J. used in the Vaught, et al, White County cemetery records.
