British Columbia
Categories and structure for British Columbia prior to joining Canada in 1871
Before British Columbia joined Canada in 1871, it had been considered a part of British North America. Prior to the 1800s, there had been little European contact, and for the early part of the century various fur trading forts and outposts had been under control of the North West Company (Athabaska Department) and the Hudson Bay Company (Columbia Department and New Caledonia). In 1849, Vancouver Island became the Colony of Vancouver Island under the British Crown, and The Colony of the Queen Charlotte Islands was formed in 1853. In 1858, mainland British Columbia became the Colony of British Columbia, and the island colonies were amalgamated into it in the 1860s.
