James Patterson (his father) lived a fairly adventurous life including time on one of the famous gambling riverboats on the Mississippi where he could have met Jerome Bonaparte, brother of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. It is speculated that Jerome got his name because his father was acquainted with Napoleon's brother who lived for a while as a gambler on the riverboats in/near New Orleans, Louisiana. James went back to farming when he got older.[1]
Jerome married Julia Ruth Needham about 1852, probably in New York, since their first child was born in New York in March of 1853. In 1855, Jerome is listed as a farmer.[2][3] Something tragic happened, but not immediately. Jerome had the time to write his Last Will and Testament. In any case, Jerome died in Willsboro, Essex, New York in 1862. He was in his early thirties. His probate was started in January 1863.[4]
