i was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. I earned my B. Math which enabled me to earn a good living as a software engineer, but that's behind me now as I've retired and can devote time to hobbies like genealogy.

My father grew up in Renfrew County, and spent a few years in the armed forces during WW-II after which he used his veteran education grants to become a doctor. After some moving around finding a place to practice, he finally settled his family in Hastings, Ontario which is where I grew up.

My mother was a Newfoundlander, born pre-confederation. She played French Horn in the Women's Auxiliary, and met my dad in Toronto where they were welcoming the troops home after WW-II.

Hi Jim.

I can help with the Swearingen/VanSwearingen family. Gerrit (van Sweringen) Van Swearingen (abt.1636-abt.1698) is my 9th Great-grandfather and I have done a lot of research.

I think at this point, we just need to get rid of the Andrew Van Sweringen profile I created - I've updated it to match the one that already exists and proposed they be merged; there's nothing in the one I created that needs keeping as the earlier one is pretty complete. It appears WikiTree didn't spot the duplicate because I gave the surname as Van Sweringen, not Sweringen. (That shouldn't affect the merge).

My interests are actually with the Virgin family (it was my grandmother's name though any relation to Eleanor are too distant for me to identify, but I was pulling her into a One Name Study I've set up). I would like to resolve the two Eleanor profiles somehow. Thanks, Robin.

Hi Jim, thanks for removing that incorrect source (Findagrave). I must have added it when I was a newbie genealogist. My biggest mistake when joining Wikitreers was adding a big gedcom! So full of errors, and none of the sources came through.

Perhaps someday I'll work through all of it again!

Hi!

Just checking in with a few quick tips:

Free Space pages are wiki pages for supplementing your family history. They can be used to profile anything of significance such as a special pet, a meaningful event, a school you attended, a family heirloom .... They're "anything pages".

Not sure what to include in a profile? Check out our Biography Ideas and Styles and Standards help pages.

Lastly, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving those unfortunate situations.

If you have any questions, please ask!

Hi again Jim –

You are now a confirmed member of WikiTree! Thank you for volunteering.

Not sure how to start? Check out How to Use Wikitree.

Have fun and ask for help in G2G if you need it! WikiTree members are always eager to offer guidance to a fellow genealogist. It’s a fun place too. Take a look at what I mean here, G2G’s Question of the Week: What is the craziest online genealogy "fact" (really fiction) that you've come across? The G2G forum is a great way to get to know our community, and if you would like to get more involved, see this page for volunteer opportunities.

Happy hunting!

Hi Jim,

Welcome to WikiTree! The initial email from us has helpful links that will get you started on WikiTree, which is not like any genealogy site you’ve ever used.

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person, and that means we all work together as a BIG collaborative team!

Once you volunteer, one of our Greeters will be happy to confirm your membership, and you’ll be on your way!

Welcome to the family! We’re really glad you’re here.
