John Patterson and Matilda Hutton came to Canada in 1849 from either County Down or County Antrim, Ireland. The brought with them their older children Robert, William John and Mary Jane.
The Patterson family settled first in South Elmsley township, Leeds County, Ontario. This was near the area where several of Matilda's siblings had settled, in Kitley Twp near Jasper. In 1856, the family moved to a new homestead on the Barr Line in Bromley Township, Renfrew County, Ontario. As well as their older children there were several more born in Jasper, Sarah Ann, Johnston and James Lowrey. Only their youngest son George was born at the Renfrew County farm where they spent the rest of their lives.
