James William Patterson was born about 28 March 1821.
James married Mariah S (Unknown) Burgess (1821 - 1894)on 10 November 1842 in Augusta, Virginia, United States.[1] Their son was Elmer Ellsworth Patterson (1863 - 1923).
James died on 23 November 1890 and was buried in 1890 in Lemons, Putnam, Missouri, United States.[2]
Obituary Jas. W. Patterson, subject of this memoir, was born in Augusta Co. Va., March 28, 1821, died Nov. 23, 1890. Age at death 69 years, 7 months and 25 days. Removed to Iowa in the fall of 1855, and settled in the following spring in Davis county, where he lived until the spring of 1869, when he moved to Putnam county, where he has since lived. He is survived by his wife and seven children, four sons and three daughters, all of whom were present at his death. Father Patterson gave two sons to the service of his country and one to the ministry of the M. E. Church, W. E. of the Iowa Conference. [3]

In the 1870 census Jas (age 49) was the head of household in Union Township, Putnam, Missouri, United States.[5]
In the 1880 census James (age 59), Farmer, was the married head of household in Wilson Township, Putnam, Missouri, United States.[6]
