Biography

Alexander PATTERSON was born in Ireland in 1726/7 and came to Bucks Co. abt. 1740 with his brothers and sister. He had married in Ireland, and brought his wife with him but she died soon after they arrived in this country, leaving a daughter Rachel who afterwards married a William MCCORD of Bucks Co, but of her family I have nothing further. [see LDS Ancestral File, ver 3.04]

" To sons Alexander and Andrew that plantation I bought of Overhold, they paying the remainder due thereon." [Will of John PATTERSON, dated 24 Nov 1755]

1763 Purchased of his brother Nicholas and wife Martha, land in Bucks Co. granted by the London Company in 1761. He had already received of his father's estate, a half interest in a plantation in Tinicum Twp., the other half being held by his brother Andrew.

1765 He and wife, Pheby, sold a tract of land in Tinicum, Bucks Co. Nicholas PATTERSON, a the company sale, bought 193 acres & 124 perches. This tract Nicholas & Martha his wife, conveyed to his brother Alexander by deed dated 29 Sep 1765 (recorded in Deed Book No. 23, p.32). On 14 May 1779 Alexander & his wife Phoebe conveyed to Nicholas CHARLES (Deed Book No. 23, p.226).

The earliest known records of the Tinicum Congregation begin with the Call of Rev. Alexander MITCHELL from the New Brunswick Presbytery in 1768. This call is signed by Alexander PATTERSON, John PATTERSON, Robert PATTERSON Esq., and Robert, Francis, Charles, David, John, Samuel, Ralph & Andrew WILSON. [Warren S. While residing in Bucks Co., Alexander was a member of the Tinicum Presbyterian Church and in the records of the church we find the baptisms of two of his children, Phoebe (16 Dec 1770) and John (1 Nov 1772).

  • REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE*

Nicholas PATTERSON was the Captain of the Associated Company, July 1775, the 1st military organization under the committee of safety, of which his brother Robert was the representative from Tinicum. On the roll of the company appear the names of John PATTERSON Sr., John PATTERSON Jr., Alexander & Andrew PATTERSON, Andrew & James WILSON. Alexander PATTERSON seems to have moved to the Tuscarora country before the close of the Revolution; evidently a resident of Tinicum in May 1779 when deed executed.

ca. 1780 Removed with his family to Toboyne Twp., Cumberland Co. (now within the limits of Perry Co.), or Sherman's Valley as it was then known. Here he had a farm of 230 @.

4 Oct 1786 Disposed of Toboyne Twp. property and removed to Milford Twp. (now Spruce Hill Twp., Juniata Co.) in the Tuscarora Valley. He purchases of the heirs of William GRAHAM for the sum of L.500 a tract of 150 @ lying on the Tuscarora Creek. (Is this near current town of Seven Pines on S.R. 75?)

FAMILY HISTORY

JUDGE J. KELLY PATTERSON, retired. Walnut, Beale township, Juniata county, Pa., was born near Pleasant View, Spruce Hill township, Juniata county. Pa., February 25, 1825.

The Patterson family originated in Ireland. The first representative of the family to come to this country was the great-great-grandfather of Judge PATTERSON, who with his six sons, Alexander, John, Nicholas, Andrew, Solomon and James, settled in Bucks county. Pa., in 1845; all were farmers.

Alexander PATTERSON, great-grand- father of Judge Patterson, was born in Ireland in 1T2-1. After reaching Bucks county in 1745 he spent some time there, but before the year 1778, came to Tuscarora Valley, now Juniata county, where he purchased land and spent the remainder of his life. He married Phebe CARROL, of New Jersey; their children are: Diana (Mrs. John LEMON); Jemima (Mrs. Hugh ALEXANDER); Mary (Mrs. ABERNATHY); Andrew, a farmer, of Beale township; John; Jane; and Rachel (Mrs. Will MCCORD). John PATTERSON, grandfather of Judge PATTERSON, was born October 6, 1772, and was a farmer. He married Nancy LYON, of Mifflin county. Pa.; their children are: Alexander, farmer, died in 1869; James; Andrew, deceased; Elizabeth (Mrs. Moses KELLY), deceased; Phebe (Mrs. William MCCLURE), of Perry county; Rachel (Mrs. James MCCLURE), of Perry county; John, AYilliam, and Robert, all deceased. Mr. Patterson died October 10, 1843; his wife died April 16, 1865, aged eighty-five years. In 1828 he was elected a member of the State Legislature on the Whig ticket; he also served as justice of the peace. He was an elder of the Presbyterian church.

James PATTERSON, father of Judge PATTERSON, was born in Mnj, 1797, in Spruce Hill township, where he was a tanner until 1865. He then retired and died March 22, 1869. He was married December 2, 1819, to Jane, daughter of John KELLY, of Milford township. Their children are: John M., deceased; J. Kelly; Rebecca C, eldest of the family, widow of Rev. John FLEMMING, of Nebraska, Pa.; Nancy J. (Mrs. William MCCLURE), deceased; Robert A., deceased; Joseph A., a Presbyterian minister, deceased; William A., Nebraska; Samuel; and one son who died in infancy, unnamed. Mr. Patterson was an el- der in the Presbyterian church. His political views were Republican.

J. Kelly PATTERSON attended the schools of his native township, and the Tuscarora Academy. He was reared a farmer and tanner, and worked in the tannery and on the farm with his father until 1856. In 1861, he 826 BIOGEAPEICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA bought his father's tannery and conducted it for fifteen years; lie has eA'er since been engaged in farming; in 1879, he removed to Beale township. Before buying the tannery, he was in mercantile business at Johnstown. Mr. Patterson was elected associate judge of Juniata county in 1886. He has also held various township offices. Judge Kelly PATTERSON was married March 2, 1854, to Elizabeth S. BEALE, a native of Beale township, and a daughter of Judge John BEALE, one of the oldest residents of that township. Their children are: W. Howard, farmer, on the homestead, married Susan BRUBAKER, and has four children; Mary J. (Mrs. David Esh), of Spruce Hill township; Helen Mar, deceased; Almira McF. (Mrs. George Brackbill) ; Joseph; a son that died in infancy; and Harry K. Judge PATTERSON is a member of the Presbyterian church of Academia. The family have occupied the same seat in church for forty years, and the judge was leader of the choir for twenty-five years. He was a charter member of the AVal- nut Grange. ["Biography of Judge J.
