George S. Patton born Charleston (now West Virginia), September 30, 1856, the son of George S. Patton and Susan Thornton Glassell; graduate, VMI Class of 1877; after graduation taught at VMI for one year; studied law and became a prominent attorney in Los Angeles, where he was also active in politics; married Ruth Wilson, 1884; children: George S.(b. 1885) and Anne (b. 1887); died June 1927, Los Angeles, CA.[1]
George S. Patton was born on 30 Sep 1856 in Charleston, Virginia. His original name was George William Patton on his birth certificate. [2] However, he is not officially the second George Smith Patton, since he was named George William Patton at birth, he changed his name in 1868 to honor his father
who passed away from wounds suffered during the Third Battle of Winchester in 1865.[3]
George Smith Patton married Ruth Wilson on 10 Dec 1884 in Los Angeles,
California. [4]
George Smith Patton is buried in the San Gabriel Cemetery in San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California. [5]
George S. Patton was the first city attorney of Pasadena, in 1877. He also opened a Los Angeles law practice before being elected District Attorney in 1886. Patton also would be the first mayor of San Marino. He was less successful, however, standing for other public offices -- losing a bid for the U.S. Congress in 1894 and for the Senate in 1916. Patton swam against the tide as a stubborn opponent of women having the vote.[6]
George and Ruth traveled abroad on several occasions. They requested passports in 1921 to travel to Panama and Havana, Cuba on the ship Hawkeye. [7] Then in 1924, they applied again to travel to the British Isles, France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. [8]
