Matthew Patton was born about 1760 in Carlisle, Cumberland Co, Pennsylvania, as the second son of Thomas William Patton and Margaret Erwin. Followed by seven younger siblings, for a total of 5 brothers and 3 sisters. Records have not been found to help estimate when the Patton family moved to North Carolina. Matthew appears to have served in the Revolutionary War. He is probably the Matthew Patton who served as a private for North Carolina and appears in the DAR ancestor index as A088910. Some bio’s suggested in fought for Pennsylvania and/or South Carolina, but the DAR does not. An pension application for war service by George Cunningham stated he fought with his brother-in-law, Matthew Patton who was gravely wounded at the Battle of Fishing Creek. The relationship does much, but he married and had children after that time to survive being “gravely wounded” thus questioning if it is the same Matthew Patton. Matthew married a neighbor girl, Margaret Catherine “Katy” Cunningham about 1785 in Burke Co, North Carolina. Their family was also from Pennsylvania. Matthew would be about 25 years old and Katy, 21 years. Matthew’s younger sister, Margaret, b. 1780 marries Humphrey Cunningham, Jr., the younger brother of Katy Cunningham.[expect to see DNA matches with these two lines]. Matthew and Katy had at least ten documented children: Margaret E. b. 1786; daughter b. ?; Samuel N. b. 1790; Thomas Jefferson b. 1791; John Cunningham b. 1792; Magdalene b. 1793; Matthew Jr. b. 1795; Rhoda b. 1796; Sarah b. 1799; James Thomas b. 1801;and Martha Jane b. 1805. Matthew Patton appears on the 1790 census in Burke Co, North Carolina with 1 male, Head of Household, no males < 16y, 3 females [Katy, Margaret and daughter]. They are living next door to Jno Moore household, Matthew’s sister, Jane married John and also had two daughters under 5 years of age. They were eleven households from Thomas Patten and Humphrey Cuningam[parents of Matthew & Katy]. Matthew Patton is a second petitioner who signed the Petitions for the Formation of Buncombe County, 25 Sep 1790, along with Humphrey Cunningham. Buncombe County was formed from Burke& Rutherford Counties in North Carolina. The 1800 census lists 3 Matthew Patton’s, but there is no match that would include all 5-6 females and 4 males < 16 and 1 male > 16y. All 1800 census for Tennessee did not survive and no records have been found to support they were living in York Co, South Carolina as well.. The birth of John Cunningham in Tennessee may help provide a date the family moved to Tennessee, though Rutherford County was established from Davidson County in 1803. Family lore stated Matthew worked as a planter. Matthew’s father, Thomas Patton Sr. died in March 1808 in Buncombe County and lists, son, James Patton as his executor. Catherine Hannah was identified as representing the estate of Matthew Patton, deceased, in the 18 October 1808 land sale with other of Thomas’s children from Tennessee. This transaction helped to establish the timeline for Matthew’s death in the weeks after his will was written, 16 September 1808 until it was proven 3 Oct 1808 in Rutherford Co, Tennessee Court. He died between 16 Sept and 3 Oct. just 48 years of age. In his will, he named his wife, Katia, daughters, Margarett and Rhoda, and brother, James and witness, John Ferguson and William Hanna. Katy remarried just two weeks later to the same, William Hanna, a family friend and neighbor who was also a widower to help raise her eight younger children. It is unclear where Matthew Patton is buried.
