John was born about 1630. He passed away about 1659.
John Patton was born about 1630. He married Margaret Neely May 4, 1654 in Templemore, County Londonderry, Ireland.[1] David, son of John and Margaret was Christened 16 Mar 1654 in Templemore, County Londonderry, Ireland"Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1881", , FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VRSJ-Q27 : 5 February 2020), John Paton in an entry for David Paton, 1654.
Henry Patton and three brothers were in the army of William of Orange and participated in the defense of Londonderry from April to August 1689. He was present at the Battle of the Boyne, July 1st, 1690. Henry and family left Scotland during the reign of James the Second of England. He settled in the Province of Ulster in the north of Ireland near the Town of Newton Limavady in the County of Derry (now Londonderry).
From "James Patton and the Appalachian Colonists", Anne Rhea Bruce: Henry and Sarah lived in the Manor of Springfield, Parish of Clondevaddock, Barony of Kilmacrenan, County Donegal. Mary Preston Gray, in her book "The Family Tree" states this Henry was a shipbuilder, operating merchant ships.
From "A Chronicle of the American Lineage of the Patton's" by C. L. Patton, Springfield, Illinois, 1954, pp 10-11: The earliest authentic record of the Patton family is of one Henry Patton, who was born in the Lowlands of Scotland near the town of Dundee. He was married to Sarah Lynn, daughter of The Laird of Loch Lynn, Scotland. There were several children born to this marriage, the names of three being known: John, James, and Elizabeth. There were three other daughters and several sons, one of whom was William. Others in this union were Matthew, Thomas, Robert, Henry, David, Benjamin, and Hugh.
Henry and his family left Scotland during the reign of James the Second of England. He settled in the Province of Ulster in the north of Ireland, near the town of Newton-Limavady, in the County of Derry (now Londonderry). There John, James, and Elizabeth were born.
All these Patton's were in Pennsylvania at the same time and all owned land in Lancaster County. Their names all appear in Augusta County, Virginia records at a later time. They were all property owners in Augusta and resided in the same vicinity.
There has been a tradition in the Patton family, handed down from generation to generation, that one of the Patton ancestors was the father of "eleven sons, all over six feet in height." Henry was the ancestor referred to in this legend.
It is unknown if Henry migrated to America, but there is definite evidence that John, James, and Elizabeth took up their residence in August County, Virginia. In the Pennsylvania archives the names of William, Matthew, Thomas, Robert, Henry, David, Benjamin, and Hugh all appear as purchasers of parcels of land in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as follows.
William Patton - 200 acres, July 23, 1735; Matthew Patton - 200 acres, October 29, 1735. Thomas Patton - 100 acres, October 13, 1739; Robert Patton - 200 acres, June 3, 1741; Henry Patton - no date; David Patton - no date; Benjamin Patton - no date; Hugh Patton - no date. The records of all these purchases are found in the same volume of the Archives and extend over a period from 1735 to 1744. All these holdings were in Lancaster County. The names of all these Patton are found later in the records of August County, Virginia. Information from A Chronicle of the American Lineage of the Patton shows Henry Patton married Sarah Lynn, Dau. of the Laird of Loch Lynn, Scotland. Of this marriage, there were three known children and three daughters plus several sons. A tradition handed down in the Patton Family from generation to generation says that one of the Patton ancestors was the father of eleven sons, all over six feet in height. Henry was the ancestor referred to in this legend. It doesn't show if Henry ever immigrated to America, but all the sons and Daughters did. All showed up in Lancaster County and then many moved on to Augusta County, Virginia but I have found no record of our ancestor Thomas going to Virginia. Henry and his family left Scotland during the reign of James II of England, about 1685-1690. He settled in the Province of Ulster in the north of Ireland, near the town of Newton-Limavady, in the County of Derry. There John, James, and Elizabeth were born. Henry, with 3 brothers was in the army of William of Orange and participated in the Defense of Londonderry from April to August 1689. He was present at the Battle of the Boyne, on July 1, 1690, Death date not known. All brothers acquired Land in Lancaster County; Thomas bought land on 13 October 1739. These records show up in the Pennsylvania Archives over the period from 1735 to 1744. This indicates that they left Ireland from About 1730 to 1735. It indicates that there were four daughters of this family and Elizabeth was the youngest. Order of Children is not known Ages are approximate. Using the rule of thumb for estimating DOB Margaret Lynn was married to John Lewis in 1716. Therefore, Margaret and Sarah would be born about 1695 and John should have been born closer to 1690 than the 1660 used in the Chronicles. This would put Henry's Birth about 1660.[2]
John Patton (abt. 1658 - 1692), the son of William Henry Patton Sr. (1641 - abt. 1689) and Sarah Jane (Spears) Patton (1645 - 1710), supposedly also married a Nancy (Neely) Patton (abt. 1657 - abt. 1700). It seems unlikely that both Johns married women with the exact same name. But they cannot be merged easily either because of their dates and their ancestry. This John is William Thomas Patton's son. The other John is a greatgrandson of William Thomas Patton. Can anyone solve this puzzle?
