Biography

John Pitman Paul was born about 1829 at Dunpole in Ilminster, Somerset, England to (?) Paul and Kezia (Berry) Paul.

John's father passed away when he was very young, and his mother Kezia Paul married George Paul on 6 Nov 1835 in Bristol.^[1] Likely George was the brother of her first husband.

[Still trying to locate John on the 1841 census, he is not with his mother, stepfather, and siblings who lived at Dunpole in Ilminster.]

In 1851 John Pitman Paull (age 23, Farmers Son Employed on the Farm) lived at Dunpole in Ilminster, Somerset with his step-father George (48, Farmer Of 248 Employing 7 Men & 3 Boys), mother Kezia (54), four full siblings: Keren (24), Samuel (20, upholsterer), James (18, employed on farm), and George (16, employed on farm); four half-siblings: Edmund (14, scholar), Joseph (12, scholar), Harriett (10, scholar), and Henry (7, scholar); as well as two servants: Mary Ann Marchant (19, dairymaid) and James Prewer (14, labourer).^[2]

In 1861 John Pitman Paul (age 32, Farmer of 344 Acres Employing 8 Lab & 7 Boys) lived in Thorley, Hampshire on the Isle of Wight with his sister Keren (34), brother George (27, Farmers Assistant), and house servant Elizabeth Newbury (15).^[3]

John Pitman Paul married Penelope Wood, daughter of William Aylford Wood, on 18 Sep 1863 in Wiltshire.^[4]

In 1871 John P 'Pane' (age 42, farmer) lived in Thorley with his wife Penelope (26), four daughters: Jessie C (6), Flora P (4), Colleen (3), and Inez C (0), as well as governess Florince Adams (23), and three servants: Ann Moon (24), Sarah Thomas (24), and Mary Crofs (19).^[5]

In 1881 John Pitman Paul (age 52, Farmer Of 836 Acres Employing 11 Men 3 Boys) lived in Thorley with his wife Penelope (36), three daughters: Inez Cornelia (10), Thyra Adelene (5), and Zillah (2), as well as three servants: Elizabeth Powell (23, cook), Alice Powell (15, nurse), and Martha Amelia Rock (19, housemaid).^[6]

John Pitman Paul passed away in 1890, aged 61 years. His death was registered in Isle of Wight in the third quarter of the year.^[7]
