Biography

North Carolina Flag
David Paul was born in North Carolina.

David was born about 1830,[1] the son of Zacheus and Nelly / Nellie[2] Ellen (Bennett) Paul.[3] He was living with his widowed mother, Ellen Paul in 1850, Craven County.[4] Although it is reported on his death certificate that he was born in Pamlico, the property on which the family lived was originally Goose Creek, Craven County and later became rezoned into Pamlico.

1st Marriage & Children

14 Dec 1854, David married Elizabeth B Jewell in Craven County.[5]

In the 1860 census, we find David and Elizabeth with three children[6]

  1. Nancy (Ellen) (Paul) Adair (5) (ca. 1856-1923[7])
  2. James (Franklin) Paul (3) (ca. 1858-1935[8])
  3. Harriet Paul (1) (b. c. 1859)

2nd Marriage & Children

13 Jul 1870, David married Henrietta Rice (1846-1921, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Rice[2][9]) 17 Jul 1870, also in Craven County.[10]

In the 1870 census, we find David (49) with his second wife, Henrietta (25)[11] (by most accounts, these are all children David had by his first wife, Elizabeth Jewell):

  1. Nancy Ellen Paul (13) (circa. 1856-1923), as above
  2. Benjamin (10) (born about 1860)
  3. Mary Elizabeth (Paul) Rice (10) (circa 1861-1940)[12]
  4. Fereby/Pheraba/Ferebee (Paul) Adams (6) (circa 1868-1918)[13]
  5. David Paul (5) (born about 1865)
  6. John Paul (4) (born about 1866)
  7. Henry Paul (1) (born about 1869)
  8. Willa F Paul (1) (born about 1869)

With the 1880 census, all of the children that David had with Henrietta were born (age at census shown in parentheses), except for the youngest:[1]

  1. George Battle Paul (6) (ca. 1873-1942)
  2. Adam Luther Paul (5) (ca. 1875-1947[14])
  3. Elizabeth Bettie Victoria (Paul) Bennett (8) (1875-1947, who was widowed at the time of her death[15])
  4. Cleoria/Clora F (Paul) Wiley (3) (1877-1943), who was widowed at the time of her death[16]
  5. Hancy Lonia (Paul) Gaskins (0) (circa 1880-12 Feb 1949), who was survived by her husband, E G Gaskins[17]
  6. Phoebe Bream (Paul) Lee (1881-1941), who was survived by her husband J J Lee[18], (married 13 Dec 1907)[19]

The last census in which he is recorded was 1880.[1] His traditional death date is before 1889, Pamlico County.
