DR. PAUL DIES AT SEA
City's Medical Officer
GREAT WORK FOR CHILDREN
Dr. G. W. F. Paul, medical officer for the Brisbane City Council, suffered a sudden heart attack, and died at sea at 2 p.m. yesterday, three hours before the Esperance Bay reached Fremantle.
Accompanied by Mrs. Paul, he was on his way to England to visit his only daughter, Mrs. Herold Kyng, whose husband is now studying medicine. Mrs. Paul will continue the voyage to England, and at her request the burial will take place at sea.
Dr. Paul was aged 73 years. He studied in London College Hospital, where he took the degrees M.B.C.S. and L.R.C.P., and later at Brussels University, where he gained his M.D.
He practised at Sandgate for some years, then in Cobar (N.S.W.), and he came to Brisbane in 1912.
His name will be linked with the civic health of Brisbane, because of his excellent work in immunising children against diphtheria. Since he became the city health officer a few years ago, 10,000 children have been treated. This work necessitated visits to schools, and his attendance at the City Hall on several afternoons each week. As a result, diphtheria in the metropolitan area has decreased steadily.
Dr. Paul's wide knowledge of other public health problems was such that his views were always eagerly sought and appreciated by the council. Before he became the city's full-time medical officer he had served as health officer for some years for the now defunct South Brisbane Council. Recently he was granted six months' leave of absence.
His kindly and courteous manner, his valuable advice and cheerful humour, made him a most popular officer and esteemed friend. He liked music, and some years ago did much amateur theatrical work.
Dr. Paul has two sons in Brisbane— Messrs. William Noel Paul and Claude Turner Paul.
"I am exceedingly sorry to hear of Dr. Paul's death," said the Lord Mayor last night. "Apart from his being a valued civic officer, I was proud to have his personal friendship. He was indeed one of nature's gentlemen. When he bade me farewell he appeared to be in excellent health, and was bright and cheerful.[8][9]
