Biography

Robert Paul, son of Samuel Paul, was born on or after 1756 in Caswell, NC. Robert married Priscilla Burton, the daughter of Robert Burton III and Judith LaForce in Caswell County, North Carolina on May 28, 1781. Priscilla was born May 27, 1761 in Goochland County, Virginia. Samuel Paul was bondsman for the marriage. In turn, Robert was bondsman for his father Samuel’s marriage to Priscilla’s widowed mother Judith LaForce Burton on Jan. 14, 1784. Also listed as witnesses are J. Campbell and William McAden. Ref. Caswell County Marriage Bonds, 1778-1864, by Katherine Kerr Kendall.

Robert was a Revolutionary soldier in the North Carolina Hillsborough District as evidenced by his military pay voucher. Ref. “"North Carolina Revolutionary Pay Vouchers, 1779-1782," State Archives of North Carolina, Raleigh.

He also fought in the Georgia Militia and was awarded a draw in the Land Lottery of Georgia in 1827. Ref: Land Lottery of Georgia, 1827, page 47; Certified copy of land grant, Jones County. Ga., to Robert Paul Sr., as a Revolutionary soldier

By the time of his father’s death, Robert moved his family into Georgia, first into Lincoln County and then settling in Jones Co. by 1810, once part of Baldwin County. Robert Paul is enumerated in the 1820 Census and in the 1830 Census for Jones Co.

Robert can be traced by his name appearing as a witness on recorded documents:

Robert and wife are in the 1830 Census of Jones Co., Georgia. Both are enumerated as between the ages of 50 and 60.

Priscilla Paul participated in the 1832 lottery as a Revolutionary War widow; from this we theorize that Robert died before 1832 in Jones Co., and was buried somewhere in Jones Co., Ga. Priscilla outlived him, but as yet we have no record of her death.

Hi Don,

Looking at the recent change history to Robert P. Paul profile, it appears that there is conflicting edits as to whether Judith Laforce is his biological mother. I don't want to just go into this open profile and propose a change again without more discussion. Does anyone have any information /sources to show Judith Laforce as his biological mother, as I would be highly interested? Otherwise his mother should most factually left as Unknown. Some of us have been researching for her for a long time. The only records we have is a Judith Laforce was married to a Samuel Paul in Caswell, NC in 1784, at least 25 years after Robert P. Paul was born.
