Florence Helen was born in Newton, Massachusetts, in 1870, the daughter of Luther and Ellen (Briggs) Paul. She grew up in Newton, where she attended local schools.
She graduated from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1891. 
She was a teacher at the Latin High School in Somerville, Massachusetts, for 12 years, resigning in 1904.
She married Homer Blaikie Grant, an officer in the U.S. Army, in 1904. Florence died suddenly less than 2 years later, when she was 36 years old. She is buried at the Newton Cemetery in her hometown of Newton.
