Biography

Presumed to be Charles Paulet, Jr., the 2d Duke of Boulton. Son of Charles, 1st Duke of Boulton (1630–1699) and Jane Sackville (1627–1692).

Charles Paulet, Jr. (1661-1722), 2nd Duke of Bolton, is said to have married Catherine Mary Stuart (1652-1741) in London (or Plymouth) in 1678 but again there is no confirmation of this marriage or even of a relationship. The 2nd Duke of Boulton is known to have married three times: Margaret Coventry (1657-1681; m. 10 Jul 1679, London); Frances Ramsden (1661-1696; m. 8 Feb 1682/3); Henrietta Crofts (1682-1729; m. 1697, Dublin). Charles Paulet, Jr. and Frances Ramsden did have a daughter Mary born in 1696.

It may be that the Charles Paulet who is said to have married Catherine Mary Stuart in London (or Plymouth) in 1678 was a person entirely different from the 2nd Duke of Boulton.

THESE PERSONS AND ATTRIBUTIONS REQUIRED ADDITIONAL RESEARCH. FOR THE TIME BEING, HOWEVER, I AM LEAVING THEM AS IS.

  • CHARLES PAULET son of Charles Paulet, 1st Duke Bolton and MARY SCROPE.

He was not related to Jane Sackville and he never married a STUART or anyone named Catherine, his wives in order were: Margaret Coventry, Frances Ramsden and Henrietta Crofts.

Charles Paulet, 2nd Duke of Bolton KG PC (1661 – 21 January 1722) was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Member of Parliament for Hampshire and a supporter of William III of Orange. He was the son of Charles Paulet, 1st Duke of Bolton, and Mary Scrope, daughter of Emanuel Scrope, 1st Earl of Sunderland. From 1675 (when his father succeeded as Marquess of Winchester) until April 1689 (when his father was created 1st Duke of Bolton), he was styled Earl of Wiltshire. From 1689 until his succession to the Dukedom in 1699 he was styled Marquess of Winchester.[2]

He was Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire and Dorset, a commissioner to arrange the union of England and Scotland, and was twice a lord justice of the kingdom. He was also lord chamberlain of the royal household and Governor of the Isle of Wight.

In Jonathan Swift's tract Remarks on the Characters of the Court of Queen Anne, a commentary on the book Memoirs of the Secret Services by John Macky, in response to Macky's statement that the Duke "Does not now make any figure at court", Swift's dismissive reply was, "Nor anywhere else. A great booby". Charles married three times:

First, on 10 July 1679 to Margaret Coventry (14 September 1657 – 7 February 1681/1682); Margaret was the daughter of George Coventry, 3rd Baron Coventry, and Margaret Tufton. No children resulted from this marriage.

Second on 8 February 1682/1683 to Frances Ramsden (baptised 14 June 1661 – 22 November 1696), daughter of William Ramsden and Elizabeth Palmes. They had five children: Lady Frances Powlett (baptised 20th October 1684 Chawton, Hants - d. 1715), married John Mordaunt, Viscount Mordaunt (d. 1710) in 1708. Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton (3 September 1685 – 26 August 1754). Lady Betty Charlotte (baptised 21st December 1686 at Chawton, Hampshire) Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Bolton (24 July 1691 – 9 October 1759). He married Catherine Parry (d. 25 April 1744). The marriage resulted in the birth of Charles Paulet, 5th Duke of Bolton, Harry Paulet, 6th Duke of Bolton and daughters Catherine Paulett and Henrietta Paulett. Lady Mary Powlett.

Third, around 1697 to Henrietta Crofts (d. 27 February 1729/1730), a natural daughter of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth and Eleanor Needham. They had a son: Lord Nassau Powlett (d. 1741). He married Isabella Tufton, daughter of Thomas Tufton, 6th Earl of Thanet and Lady Catherine Cavendish.

Charles Powlett, 2nd Duke Bolton was NEVER married to Catherine Stuart who actually went by Catherine Fitz Charles and was born in 1658, never married she became a nun, or possibly died young. Wikipedia.org

RE: Charles daughter Mary: There is NO Mary Paulet/Powlett born in 1679 she never existed - Christopher Locke was NEVER married to Mary Powlett. SOURCE: Devon, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812 Name: Christopher Locke Record Type: Marriage Marriage Date: 6 Dec 1703 Marriage Place: North Molton, Devon, England Residence Date: 1703 Religion: Anglican Spouse: Anna Rumbelow (d/o William Rumbelow and wife Anne Devon, England)

HERE'S THE CORRECT INFORMATION FOR LADY MARY POWLETT/PAULET: Lady Mary Powlett was the daughter of Charles Powlett, 2nd Duke of Bolton and Frances Ramsden (NOT Catherine Stuart). They married February 1682, Lady Mary was born c 1696, the year her Mother died. She married, secondly, Hon. Capel Moore, son of Henry Hamilton-Moore, 3rd Earl of Drogheda and Mary Cole. She married, firstly, Cormac Óg O'Neill, son of Colonel John O'Neill and Rose (?).2 Her married name became O'Neill.1 Her married name became Moore.1 Citations [S37] BP2003 volume 1, page 1181.

Hi Bridgitte (Baker) Pascale,

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

The Charles Paulet about whom you write is otherwise Charles Paulet KG PC (abt.1661-1722).

If you had reviewed the profile of Paulet-127, you would see that a match between Paulet-127 and Paulet-2 was rejected not long ago. While I might have missed it, I did not find a comment explaining why the match was rejected, but text in the narrative provides clues:

(a) The change log for this profile reports it was created and edited by someone who is no longer a member of WikiTree. That one-time collaborator wrote, "It may be that the Charles Paulet who is said to have married Catherine Mary Stuart in London (or Plymouth) in 1678 was a person entirely different from the 2nd Duke of Boulton."
(b) The same contributor also wrote, "These persons and attributions require additional research. For the time being, however, I am leaving them as is."

In other words, just because this Paulet-127 might be a confused duplicate profile of Paulet-2, doesn't mean it is.

Since Paulet-127 was created, it seems well-intended WikiTree collaborators have been working toward better identifying this man, in order to rule out that he was not Paulet-2, "Charles Paulet, Jr., the 2d Duke of Boulton. Son of Charles, 1st Duke of Boulton (1630–1699) and Jane Sackville (1627–1692)."

If you have done the research and proven that there was no such other person, Paulet-127, then might you post comments outlining the research you did in support of that proof.

Thank you again for supporting WikiTree.--Gene

My research entailed me going to many different websites and NOT finding another person with that name, I don't believe there's a way to show what we cannot find. England has many websites for research and I could not find any baptism, marriage or wills by another man named Charles Paulet/Powlett b.1630/31 in England, nor could I find any records of an Anne Sackville married to anyone named Locke, same for "Catherine Mary Stewart" that is a made up name, it's being used in Relative Search by some people who prefer to create people rather than use sources for the actual ancestor, it's been going on for years, it's appalling. I actually have 2 Catherine Stewart's in my tree, not born the same year as the fictitious one, but women who have sources and can be verified. I'm writing a book about my family and will not add these fictitious people, and it needs to stop. I'm tired of deleting 10 + generations due to made up people without sources and will not ever again add anything to my tree unless I have facts. Above I showed sources for who they DID marry and where they came from - the made up ones have no sources. The person or people who make corrections for Wikitree can make those changes, I would use the ones with sources personally and not leave them "right here for now" - that makes no sense, people who are new to Genealogy will copy the incorrect information and spread it even more. My only goal is to correct and replace incorrect information with Correct information and actual sources. Thank you for being part of the Wikitree team and helping to correct these issues.
It takes time, it is frustrating, etc.

Assuming this is an error, but by no means suggesting it is, then there are different approaches to the work One approach used quite often to research and located the source from which the errant association or identity is believe to have sprung. Sometimes this is an error in print; it may be an error in an IGI record, or some other, often widely accessible, index or database.
