Biography

Henry Pauley was the son of David Polly and Agnes Adkins. He was born around the year 1767 in Halifax County, Virginia. He married Athalia Mullins there in 1792 and they settled on Big Cherrystone Creek. In 1805 Henry and a number of his brothers moved to Kanawha County, Virginia (now West Virginia), settling near the headwaters of the Coal River in what is present-day Boone County (for a time it was Logan county).

The Henry Pauleys sold their land in Pittsylvania co. in 1804 and were on the Kanawha County tax list in 1806. Mohaney, son of Henry, said he was brought there as a child in 1805.[1]

Henry lived in the part of modern Boone County that was Logan County from 1824-1847 and Kanawha before that. In 1806 Henry Pauley started paying personal property taxes in Kanawha County. In 1810 Henry, John, and Joseph Pauley were on the census rolls in Kanawha County. The 1810 Kanawha County personal property tax lists contain: Joseph and Henry Polly and William and Benjamin Griffith. Henry and Althalia joined the Olive Branch Baptist Church in June 1826, received by letter. Henry was about 56. He is listed in the 1830 Logan County census.[2]


1787 - In the Pittsylvania County, Virginia, tax list, Griffith Dickerson's district, we find Joseph, Edwd., David, and Henry listed.[3]

17 May 1792 - Henry signs the license for Nancy Gentry to marry John Mullins in Halifax Co., Virginia. He was a bondsman along with John Mullins . "Sir, this shall in---y you to give lisnes (sic, license) to John Mullins to be married to me. I oblige you. Nancy Gentry (her mark) , Henry Polly (his mark)."[Needs sourcing]

27 Sep 1792 - Henry Polley marries Athalial Mullins in Halifax County, Virginia. Service by Rev. Jesse Owen. Bond was posted on the 24th. Security by John Lax. Consent of William Mullins for the bride.[4]

19 Jul 1802 - Henry Polly to James Grigsby, 40 acres on Cherry Stone Creek adjoining the Jefferson Road, Joseph Polley, James Taylor, Obediah Taylor, William Waller. Atha, his wife, relinquished dower.[5]

3 Oct 1804 - Henry Polley to John Midkiff, 185 acres on the branches of Cherry Stone Creek adjoining James Turley and McCrow. No witnesses or mention of Atha.[6]

- They relocate the lower Coal River near several other Pauley families in Kanawha County, Virginia (now West Virginia).

1806 - William, John, Edward, and Henry Pauley appear for the first time on the personal property tax list of Kanawha County, Virginia. Henry appears regularly thereafter. William and John were his brothers and Edward was a cousin. Brother Joseph appeared for the first time in 1809.[7]

1810 - Henry Pauly is in the census of Kanawha County, Virginia. His brother Joseph is nearby. Henry and his wife are both under 45 years of age and there are four daughters and a son in the household.[8]

1820 - Henry Polly heads a household in Kanawha County, Virginia. He is under 45 years of age (born after 1775) but his wife is over 45. This would seem to be an error. There are numerous Polly families listed.[9]

1824 - Logan County is created from portions of Kanawha and other counties.

1830 - We find Henry Pauley in the federal census of Logan County, Virginia. He is 60-70 years old, thus born 1760-70, and is listed next to Jeremiah Pauley. Brother Joseph and other Pauley's are also on the page.[10]
