P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

I have extensive trees on both of my family lines - mother and fathers. I thought I read somewhere on wiki that I could import trees from Ancestry and Family Search but I haven't found anywhere I could do this.

Hi Lillian

Azure may not have seen this, as you commented on your own profile, rather than replying to her comment.

Yes, you can upload GEDCOM files from other family history sites, such as Ancestry.

Here is a link to Ancestry's instruction on downloading a GEDCOM from Ancestry. It takes some time to download a GEDCOM. Once it has downloaded, you can then upload it on WikiTree. It will take some time to upload and you will get a message emailed to you when it is ready. The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting, or rejecting, suggested matches. This link is very helpful when working through your report GEDCOMpare Process

This is time consuming, though can be worth it in the end. Unlike other sites, where there are many trees, WikiTree is a single tree, so checking before uploading will save you the effort of having to merge duplicate profiles later. This process allows you to look for existing profiles which can save you a lot of time later.

Once you have completed the match/reject review in the GEDCOMpare process, an Add button will appear beside the remaining the records in your GEDCOM. That Add button will let you create new profiles without having to type everything. It is still a one by one process because the data needs to be reviewed for completeness and sources.

If you have more than 5,000 names, you will need to split your tree.splitting a tree

If your Ancestry tree is more than 5,000 people, you have to download your tree as a GEDCOM, then upload it to Ancestry as a duplicate tree, or upload it to a desktop program, then remove records until you have less than 5,000 names. You then download this as a GEDCOM and then you can upload it on WikiTree. Then you do the same with the remaining names.

I hope this helps, any problems please let me know

If you prefer to work from Family Search, then we have a tool called WikiTree X, though it requires you to use the Chrome browser. For further information on WikiTree X, see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:WikiTree_X

Take care

Hi,

I see that you have had your DNA tested, congratulations! Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

To be able to add names you will need to volunteer, you can do this from your Navigation page. Just add tags showing your genealogical interests e.g. surnames you are researching, in the comments box by them add the location/relationship to you, then click on the green box that says "Save tags and volunteer." We will then be able to confirm you as a member.

Volunteering just means you will work on your ancestors to help us achieve our goal of joining all individual family trees into one global family tree.

I hope this helps! If you have any problems, let me know.

Take care

Hello, You have one more step to do and that is to Volunteer your tree and add surname tags. Directions are below. Thank you for your email.

To Volunteer just add any surnames of interest into Tags so that you have one tag for each surname and location. By doing that, when you are confirmed as a member you can then click on those tags, and you'll be taken to a page where you'll see other genealogists who are also following those surnames and locations. I really encourage you to explore the connections it helps you make. :-)

Also Note There is a button to click at the bottom of the page that says Add tags and Volunteer. It is rectangular.

When you have done that one of our Greeters will confirm you as a member so that you can Edit your Profile and enter information into WikiTree. Wiki Tree Greeter ~ Andrea Pack

Karen, I'm having posting a family tree. I have trees on Ancestry and Family Search. Can't access those. I can't even start on this site.

Thanks Lillian
