Katherine was born August 14, 1881 in Jerusalem, in a German colony founded by her grandfather and great uncle. Her father, a portrait sculptor of some note, had an art studio in the Jaffa gate. In this studio Katherine spent many happy hours and had the privilege of coming into contact with a score of notables of the day since the studio was one of the sights for all world travelers who came to Jerusalem. When Katherine was eight years old the family moved to the art center in Stuttgart. In 1893, after a four year stay in Germany, Russia, and other countries, the family moved to New York City. In 1900 the family moved to Kansas, where Katherine's father was an art instructor at Bethel college. Katherine taught at a country school in Kansas, and later at the high school in Inman Kansas. She married Henry Ortmann on April 21, 1912. They had a farm in Harvey County, Kansas - fifteen (15) miles from Newton, and there they had three children. The family moved to Los Angeles in May of 1923 to recuperate from the flu. Katherine passed away March 8, 1944. Information from family history (first-hand notes and photos) as compiled by Curry 1896 and entered here by Ortman-55.
