Nicholas is named in his father Nicholas's 1805 will.[2]
Nicholas wrote his will on 3 January 1826; it was probated on 21 February 1827. The will names wife Catherine and children Elizabeth, Maria, Catherine, Samuel, Nicholas, Lewis, Stephen, and Scharlotte Sara.[3]
An 1840 Frederick County equity court case over Nicholas's estate says that his widow Catherine died 18 July 1848; it names these children:[4]

daughter Maria wife of Samuel Ramsburg
daughter Catharine wife of Lawson Lighter
son Samuel Bowlus
son Stephen Bowlus
son Nicholas Bowlus, Jr., later died intestate, no issue
son Lewis J. Bowlus, lived in Ohio and since deceased, leaving wife Rebecca Catharine (Williamson) and two children:
Silas M. Bowlus, a minor
Amos S. Bowlus, a minor
daughter Charlotte Sarah Bowlus, later died intestate, no issue
